I've use Primus VOIP for going on 3 years... Love it...
Cheap, every feature, easy, free long distance, Software phone, portability.

Without backup power, your power goes out so does your phone, sketchy quality if you don't set it up correctly. 911 address is registered, so if you move you have to change the address yourself, or they show up at your old house..

Unless some provider comes out with excatly the same service at a better price, I'd NEVER switch..

I had it for two years. My wife complained about it the whole time. So she switched it over to Shaw digital phone. I hardly ever used it myself (i usuall talk on my cell). But my wife hated the call quality. I did find on the few times I used it, that the call quality at times could be very poor. I woudn't go back unless there is a huge improvement. Friends I know that have it say similar things.

Vonage has been on the brink of bankruptcy for months

I use it. It's fine, except when you don't have internet, or there's a power outage (obviously). As long as you don't have a hstory of internet/server probs it isn't that bad of an idea to get. It's really cheap, and free calls anywhere in North America, and I think any five countries that you choose as well. I could see it being bad in a city though, with so many people sharing a server. I live in a small oilfield town of about 300 people, and am literally 200 yards from the wireless broadband tower, so my experience might be different than other people's, but honestly I have way better call quality now than I've ever had with Telus in any place I've lived.

I use primus myself. I have to say the quality is pretty bad. If I'm downloading something I can forget about using the phone. There's a lot of dirty noise sometimes when I dial out I get the wrong number. I press redial and all of sudden its the right number. But since we don't use the phone that much the price really works for us. I'm getting what I'm paying for I guess. I wish they would improve it though, but for $20 a month I'll live with it for now.

I've got Vonage and it works great for me. Of course, I run it through my DD-WRT-based router and make sure that it gets a high QoS level, so that it has higher priority than all my other net traffic. This keeps my voice calls sounding great regardless of what I'm downloading/uploading, which is nice.

You get something similar with the default motorola box, but I don't know if it's as effective.

I have vonage as well. I agree that sometimes it's 'laggy'. For twenty bux a month w/ voicemail and LD you can't go too wrong, though.

The problem with VOIP is that it's only as good as your internet connection, and Shaw/Telus couldn't care less.

My connection has not been down yet since I have had Vonage...almost a year. I the other thing I like about it is if someone leaves a message it emails it to my account and I can listen to it where ever I have email.

" I run it through my DD-WRT-based router and make sure that it gets a high QoS level "

You set it VOIP like this.. and for the most part you won't have any quality issues, regardless of how much Downloading you are doing while your on the phone.. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/ddwrt.php is the cheapest way to set it up correctly.

I'm still waiting for the government to come out and regulate or screw up VOIP in some other way, cause as far as I'm concearned after paying for regular phone for some many years, this is too good to be true...
