I spent 2200 bucks on a 1987 Buick Century 5 years ago, and other than tune-ups, I've had to replace the muffler. I think that's the definition of "bang for your buck".

Pontiac Sunfires are cheap, get you around, and no frills can be had around $12,000 --- you only really need heat anyway.. having AC is for wussies anyway! ... dear god it sucks... but you get used to it.

If i hadn't hit a curb at 60km/hr on ice, it would be perfect, almost 5 years in. .. i should really get that looked at.

Whatever you do, do not buy a Saturn ION Coupe especially. I had so much headaches with this car already and ready to drive it to the cliff. I bought it brand new in 2005 (2006 Saturn ION3 Coupe) and had problems with not starting when it starts to get cold ie: -9C, doors rattles all the time and i see indicator light comes on once in awhile even after i just got it service (annual maintenance). Piece of crap!

To the OP, I got a few questions...
Does it matter if it is import or domestic? If not, are you comfortable with any car (2 door, 4 door)? Are you planning to own this car for a long time or short period?

Best bet to save money is buy slightly used. If you're concerned about the quality of a used car, you can still find some under waranty with low mileage. Cars depreciate very rapidly, especially in the first couple years, so buying used can save you a ton of cash. I've always done this, and never had any problems.

Go and talk to Curt at Henninger Toyota (big bald guy with a goatee). Tell him Saltwater Cowboy sent you. He'll get you into something you like, for the price you can afford. I've owned a Toyota for 4 years and probably won't buy another brand. I've had Ford, GM, VW, Honda and Toyota and the Toyota has been the best. Good luck in the search.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. There's nothing wrong with the car itself. It's a fantastic car, works great, had it for over a year with no problems. The only drawback I can think of is the turning radius, other than that, everything is money.

My problem with Mitsubishi is the dealerships in town, particularly the service, and the re-sale value (I thought about trading it in on a GT) is absolutely deplorable. They don't communicate with you at all, I was never informed of the recalls, I had to figure it out myself. My overall experience with the car is great, with the company is terrible. And it's not just me, I know a couple other guys who drive Eclipses as well and they aren't happy either.

If you are spending around 20k you can't go wrong with a Honda Civic. Quality of a Toyota without the price. High resale, performs well, and economic to run.

I bought my first Honda in 2005, I will be buying another here soon. A Ridgeline. My 05 has almost 100k with spirited driving and no flaws what-so-ever. However, I do maintain my car very well.

If it's a new car you want, then I actually agree with the Honda Fit, not the most aesthetically pleasing thing, but it'll get the job done.
You might also be able to get a pretty bare-bones version of a Mazda 3 for that much (roughly), that would be a good option as well.
But yeah, 20,000 doesn't get you a whole lot these days, probably a better idea to go used.

I just sold my 98 saturn sl1 for 750.00!!... I put 250,000km on it.. barely maintained it...Drove 50k of thoes km's on dirt roads. Thing still ran great and still only burns 1 tank of gas a week commuting from the Deeeeeeep south to downtown! I didn't wanna sell it when i did, but I ran outta parking spots when I got my new truck


I've had 2 saturns, still have 1 of them and the service from the Northeast saturn has been the best service ever, anything I've needed they've bent over backwards...

From my experience new car bang for your buck has been pretty hard to beat getting a saturn.. of course... you're gonna be driving a saturn then...

IMO... like people posted above, buy a 500.00 deal and run it into the ground... you get 2 months trouble free from a 500 car and you're ahead of the cheapest new car...
