Default Xbox 360 Red ring of death

So my Xbox 360 died on me tonight, I have been expecting this since it has been freezing off and on for a month now. I purchaed best-buy's extended warranty program, does anyone know will best buy just exchange it over the counter or are they gonna send it off as if I were just to ship it to microsoft?

Just curious if anyone else has gone through this with best buy before, I didnt want to go to the store and just find out they are gonna ship it away when I could do it with microsoft anyway!

What a crappy time for it to die when NHL 08 comes out on tuesday!

Down here, they swap it out 'over the counter.' Also, since there has been a price drop, you may get the difference on a gift card. When my original Xbox died, two days before the extended warranty ran out actually, they gave me a brand new system, and a decent sized giftcard.

Hopefully you can get one with HDMI when they swap it!

Talk to MS about this before you do anything with the retailer. Since MS extended the warranty to three years, they should be able to tell you how to arrange it with the retailer. A friend of mine in a similar situation mentioned MS is reimburing people who purchased extended warranties, or making alternate arrangments. He got his at Costco with the extended warranty, and when he spoke to them about replacing it they extended his warranty further due to his extended warranty purchase. His new Xbox360 is covered for 6 years.

From what I've read you should be able to go to Best Buy and exchange it for a new one. However, a friend of mine that works at Futureshop said that if you have the service plan with they all they do is take the Xbox and ship it back to MS to get it repaired.

It will take approximately four weeks to get a new/refurbished one from MS. The policy in Canada for XBox repairs states that they are not allowed to repair the Xbox but have to exchange it with another one. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a brand new Xbox or a refurbished one.

My Xbox broke on the 22nd of August and I hope to have it back next week or the week after.

With my dealing with Best Buy, I felt generally hosed for one. I got the dreaded ring of death. I had an extended warranty for the Xbox 360 from Best Buy, so I went there thinking that I would be able to get a new one on the spot. Unfortunately they were not willing to do that so they took my Xbox to be sent into Microsoft to see if it could be repaired. I come back three weeks later to find out that my Xbox could not be fixed, so only then did I receive a new system. And the real kicker is that afterwards they explained to me that now my 2-year extended warranty was "used up" now that my xbox had been replaced and that if I had further issues with my Xbox 360, I would have to buy another extended warranty. I declined buying another warranty seeing as this was just BS. Luckily it was the right choice because since then Microsoft has come out with their own 3-year warranty for the red ring of death.

My NHL 07 freezes from time to time... is that a sign of doom and gloom?

Either that or super sucky Shaw spikes my internet for 3 seconds, and i lose games in the 3rd when winning.. god I hate that.

Yep... mine died after NHL 07 started freezing. No joke.

I sent it away on Aug. 23rd and I'm hoping my new one gets here before 08 comes out *crosses fingers*.

hmmm, I've been debating getting either an xbox 360 or a ps3, and was leaning towards the 360 because there's more games. But they sound like total pieces of garbage. Are they as bad as they seem, or are they actually fairly good systems, and these breakdowns the exception rather than the rule? Seeing as how there is actually a video out there on how to fix them, it doesn't look very good.

They're as bad as they seem, but still better than the PS3.

At least when you're 360 works there's stuff to play on it. Can't say so much for the PS3.

Hmm, I'm still debating between Ps3 and Xbox but I'm kind of leaning towards Ps3 because Xbox you have to pay to play online... Not only that, Xbox sounds like junk because I heard so many complaints about Xbox dying. Other than the games, are there any pros about 360?

Yes, you will eventually get the red rings of death. My advice to you is to just call MS now and get the process started. By the time you get the box you should have a dead Xbox (unfortunately).

I sent mine to them on the 28th of August. No chance I'm getting it back before hockey comes out but I would love it back before Halo 3 comes out.

With the Xbox 360 it's not a matter of IF it will break it's just a matter of WHEN. The 360 is far better than the PS3 in terms of games (I have both). However it's not the most stable console out there. My advice to you is to purchase the XBox 360 from Costco if you can because they have a very good return policy if it should happen to break in the near future.

The online play of games and just the whole online experience (chat, downloads, etc.) is far superior on the Xbox 360 than on the PS3. All in all the main deciding factor from the Xbox 360 and the PS3 is games. For some reason multi-platform games are better on the 360 than on the PS3. For example, when Madden 08 was released it was 30 FPS on the PS3 but 60 FPS on the 360. Not only that, but games based on the Unreal 3 engine are constantly being delayed for the PS3 (i.e. Stranglehold coming out on the PS3 two weeks AFTER the PC and 360 version). Like I suggested to Crispy's Critter, buy a 360 but buy it from a place like Costco because of their return/satisfaction guaranteed policy.

How much do I have to pay per month for online game play for Xbox 360 and what are the payment options? Credit cards only?

You can go to a retail store and purchase XBox Live Gold monthly cards. I don't know how much they are, however. I think a yearly membership costs $70 a year.

Ideally zero times. However, I'm sure it will get it at least once unless you wait for the new re-designed XBox 360s to come out (early next year).

so I contacted Best-Buy's 1-800#, they say I need to send it to microsoft. I asked her why they are not helping me since I spent $70 on the extended warranty, there reply was that since Microsoft has extended the warranty on the red ring issue, I have to send it to them. So I was a little choked, that they wont help me out. Im going to try and go to the store today, but Im pretty sure they wont help me out either.

Hopefully you shouldnt ever get the red ring of death, it was a lot of the first generation consoles that are having problems, if you are looking at getting an Xbox360, I would recommend go with the Elite, from my understanding it has a differnt processor or something like that in it, so it has less chance of the Red ring of death happening.

The Xbox 360 has gone through zero design changes with regards to processors. The only difference now is that new XBox 360 units (core/pro/elite) come with an additional heatsink to dispearse heat more effectively. However, owners of these new devices (including Elites) still get red ring of death errors.
