Life elsewhere is likely. But visits? No
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07259/817301-54.stm
While most scientists would welcome conclusive evidence of life on other planets, the scientific consensus maintains that it is unlikely that aliens have visited Earth, a Pittsburgh astronomer says.
"If their technology is so advanced, why would aliens have to sneak around and keep their presence a secret?" asked John Radzilowicz, an astronomer at the Carnegie Science Center. "They could do anything they wanted with us ... And why would they be crashing their spaceships all the time?"
Most astronomers think the chances of life existing elsewhere in the universe are very high," he said. "Some even believe it is likely intelligent life is out there. The physical and chemical laws that apply here appear to be the same everywhere."
"It's a very different thing to believe aliens are visiting us," he said. "There is no conclusive evidence that they have tried to contact us and no evidence that they have visited us."

Obviously somebody has never seen Star Trek; or if they have they are unaware of the Prime Directive.

This is pretty much how I feel about it. The distances are too great for other civilizations to be visiting us. And it is almost impossible that they would look remotely like us (ex. two eyes, two arms, two legs, etc).

Then again, maybe not. A new paper by University of Utah physicist Lior Burko, building on earlier work, raises the possibility that black holes may not annihilate everything, and that the potential for hyperspace travel is still open.
"One possibility is that black holes may allow us to travel to very remote places in the universe, or another universe entirely," said Burko in a telephone interview from his office in Salt Lake City. "It depends on the topology of the universe, which we do not know very well.... I'm not arguing it's a practical thing to do, but maybe in 1,000 years from now, maybe it would be simpler."

Different environments evolve different beings, thus I agree, two arms legs eyes etc are unlikley in the way we know them. Every species we have ever examined comes from one planet. Until we can examine some other life forms that evolved on another planet, we can only guess as to the make up of others.
Their out there for sure. I think it's niave to think that there is nothing else out there. We are a speck of dust in the scheme of things.
Why would an advanced race want to visit us anyway? What do we have to offer them? If they can traverse light years in space, there is no reason for them to want to have anything to do with us. We would be primitive to them, somewhat like ants in one specific ant hill are to us.
The topic of using a black hole for space travel isn't a new one, although at this point in time it's a pipe dream.
You can't travel faster than light according to Einstein, but if you bend space you may be able to traverse great distances in short periods of time. If that is not possible, then I doubt any seperate races will ever encounter each other. Nearest star to the Sun is 4.3 light years away!

Has no one driven down deerfoot lately?... I'm pretty sure aliens have live in calgary because where ever they're from, they never learned to drive on earth... Would explain why they crash thier ships here too...

One a more serious note... I took this picture thursday night from my backyard here in calgary... 400 billion stars in this little ball of basic elements... How someone could argue we're all by ourselves baffles me...

You took that from your backyard? Where in Calgary do you live? Are you taking the pic with a telescope, because the light pollution here is massive.
Beautiful though. Nice pic!

I tend to agree.

Why did mankind land a man on the moon?
Why does mankind want to explore other planets?
Or how about the missions of Voyager 1 and 2?
http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/
Voyager’s famous golden records, which include sounds and images of Earth. The selections portray people young and old, male and female -- not to mention examples of many other species -- and include information about every continent on the planet, as well as Earthâs location in space. Earlier NASA missions included plaques with information about Earth, in case an intelligent alien race intercepted the probes. This spurred, John Casani then Voyager's project manager, to appoint astronomer and author Carl Sagan to head a committee to come up with a message for Voyager

I'll just fire up the old hyperdrive and fly around and take a look-see later this evening. That ought to clear this up.

I don't know about that. I think scientists on Earth would be pretty damn excited if we found space ants on another planet, and would certainly want to visit if possible.
But I do agree its pretty unlikely that aliens are visiting Earth, let alone crashing on it.

I live in Auburn Bay east of cranston.. just south of 22x. My view to the south is fantastic, especially on good nights, like thursday when I took that picture.. to the north the sky doesn't exist....
I took that with a Digital SLR, and a Nikkor lens at 200mm.. Using my telescope mount that tracks across the sky so it's not a star trail picture. I had the mount hidden in the shadow of my fence so the cursed street light didn't shine directly on it

What if intelligent life follows a similar blueprint? Maybe we are a primitive form of the master planned intelligent life across the universe. After all, scientists believe that " The physical and chemical laws that apply here appear to be the same everywhere". Maybe what appears to be a long distance to us, is actually not that far for a civilization that could be millions of years evolved beyond ours?
Until anything is proven, many people will share your view. Just not I.

My point was more like there would be plenty of more interesting places to visit rather than Earth because we are a primitive Type 0 planetary system. I'm thinking that If they can traverse space, they'd rather go visit some Type 2 or Type 3 civilizations. We have nothing to offer space travelers other than our own history. And perhaps that may be a little interesting to them, i'm sure they have better and more important things to attend to. Just saying that we're pretty insignificant as we stand now in the universe, so to think that they would even want to visit us is kind of arrogant IMO.

Just a question- regarding the crashing of spaceships "all the time".... the only spaceship crash that I'm aware of was Roswell in 1947. Has there been other alleged crashes?

Alot of people seem to have it in their head that in northern Siberia in the early part of the 1900's a large nuclear event had to be alien in origin.
It seems now it was likely a large fireball explosion as is explaned in the great documentary Tutankhamuns Fireball.
