Default Building a new home

So here I am about four weeks away before I sit down with all the suppliers to pick and choose appliances, flooring, lighting, etc. for my new home that I am building.

For those of you with experience building a new home what should I look for? Any secrets to how I can save a couple of bucks?

So far I have heard if shop around for appliances I can take the best qoute to the supplier (Trail Appliances) and they will match or beat the offer... is that true?

Any help would be appreciated!

I can only speak about flooring. Who is your builder? Some builders tack on extra "admin" fees that will get collected through the flooring dealer and funneled back to the builder. It is highly unethical IMO but most large builders do it now.

For appliances I found Trail to be the cheapest.

For appliances, my fiance gets commercial pricing at coast and she priced out the same appliances as what we picked for our house and we would have saved $200 dollars but had to get it delivered and installed.

No savings there.

Appliances are a tough nut to crack. I found Trail to be the best overall priced as well.

Or if you dont care about warranty and you own a cube van, you could head south and save about 40%. (At least thats what I noticed when vacationing down there)

Wouldn't you have to pay duty on those? What would the duty be?

Who is the builder and do they allow sweat equity? Many home builders dont but its worth looking into. You can save great amounts doing something yourself.

Depends on where its made. If its assembled, even partially in North America it would be duty free, just like vehicles. Regardless, you would still be saving a large sum.

Likely the only tax you would pay at the border is GST, which you would be charged here anyways.

I saw a very nice Stainless Steel fridge at the Costco where I was on holidays for $899. Something similar here would be $2000 easily. We recently chose our appliances in Canada so we were very familiar with pricing here.

Here is a fairly recent article that mentions it...

Be careful about homeowner's warranty if you do that.
