Default (Free?) Mp3 to Midi Converter.

I just picked up my new music phone, Sony Ericsson z710i, and I was upset to learn that I could not set the mp3s I put on the phone as a ringtone.

I looked around on the internet, and found that I most likely have to buy a program which converts mp3 files to midi, and anything free is only a sample (ie, only 5 seconds of the song is played as your ringtone).

My question is, is there any programs that will do this for me for free? Or am I stuck having to either download ringtones or buy a program which will convert my mp3s? Or is there a way to "trick" the phone into using the mp3 file as a ringtone?

Any feedback is appreciated.

The thing is a MP3 is an audio recording like a CD, whereas a MIDI file is a series of instructions that say "play this instrument at this time for this span", like a sheet of music.

So to go backwards, a program would have to be able to hear the difference between the different instruments and track them and such.. I'm not sure how good they would be. Better to find a pre-existing MIDI version.

Did you get this phone from Fido? I believe the unlocked version of the phone allows MP3 ringtones (though not positive), so you may look into getting the phone unlocked and that may allow it.. not totally sure without doing more research though.

Most phones allow you to "trick" it into using mp3's as a ringtone. Although, you will require a cable to connect the phone to your computer and get an editing program for your phone. Those can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer of the phone. You will then have to re-program your phone in order to get it play mp3's as your ring tone.

In the case with my phone Nokia 6265i, i have to change a setting from "1" to "0", as my carrier set it up that way so that I can only use ring tones from them.

Search around using your phone code (Sony Ericsson z710i), and see what you come up with.

Keep in mind, doing this will most likely void your warrenty.

As far as mp3 to midi converter goes, i think winamp does that.

I did get the phone from Fido.

Before I do some research to see if getting it unlocked will allow mp3 ringtones, is there anything else I should know about unlocking the phone? What is the main purpose of it? Are there any disadvantages?
