September Dawn...
New movie coming out....
Quote:
”September Dawn” graphically dramatizes the controversial real-life massacre of 120 men, women and children traveling through Utah in the nineteenth century. The Mountain Meadows Massacre, as it is known, occurred on September 11, 1857, and was the first known act of religious terrorism on U.S. soil. A group of Mormons, many disguised as Paiute Indians, slaughtered all but 17 small children on a wagon train on its way to California. One man, the adopted son of Mormon leader Brigham Young, was eventually executed for the crime—20 years after the event. Woven into this real-life background is the Romeo and Juliet story of a young Mormon man who falls in love with a beautiful girl on the wagon train.

Something that has been largely forgotten...I wonder how close to the truth they'll come. And if they do, how will we know?

That was filmed here. From what I heard, the Mormon's weren't too happy about the way they were being depicted.

I've been reading Under the Banner of Heaven the last week and just got through a chapter describing this. Brutal stuff.

Why would they be concerned with the way people who lived 150 years ago were depicted as long as it is accurate?
I won't think any less of any Mormon person because of the movie.

I wasn't saying that.
I was simply stating that any time you dig up a part of a communities history, especially one of a violent massacre like this one, that you're going to piss a few people off - and often, they'll end up playing that card as a knee-jerk reaction.
Especially when it has been recorded both in the history books and on-screen as being an act of religious terrorism.

I wasn't insinuating that you were saying that at all. I just don't understand the mentality of people who are offended because of something they had nothing to do with.
The Mormon church has evolved a great deal in the last 100 years and has put many of the stigmas of its early incarnation behind it.

Judging by that preview it looks like Brigham Young and some other heroes of that particular crowd get, for lack of a better term, crucified, in that movie.
I don't know if it's true or not but it does look like a smear job. I can understand why people who believe that guy is a prophet or whatever will get pissed if a Hollywood movie makes him out to be a (loud, overacted) villain.
If I had any heroes, hopes, dreams or religious hankerings I know I wouldn't like seeing 'em crushed on the big screen.

Interesting that it occured on September 11th. That seems to be a bad day for religious terrorism

I was thinking the same thing. Did bin Laden and his crew know about this at the time, and plan their attacks accordingly?

I'm guessing most of the missionaries know nothing about it.

the day that they broke ground on the Pentagon was Septermber 11, 1941. seems like bin laden had a bunch of reasons to go with that date

I remember reading about this in Under the Banner of Heaven. Of course the Mormons won't be happy about this. Wasn't exactly the best moment in their history. Although they had their fair share of getting kicked around, but I guess promoting polygamy will do that.

The ones I've talked too do....but they avoid it as much as possible.
I don't think this movie will change my opinion of the Mormons as a people. The majority I know are friendly and VERY respectful. But really, what will people think of their beginning after watching this? Rouge is right....Young isn't portrayed in a positive light...at all.

I was raised in the Mormon religion and I had never herd of this incident and I don’t think any of my Mormon family would have either, agree with dis though it was 100 years ago things have changed since than if this changes you view of Mormon people that is a little ridiculous

Yep, that's the very reason I posted that. I too was raised Mormon and never heard of it.

This news to me as well!
What the story with the Mormon's, they believe that Jesus came to live with the North American Indians after he was crucified?

the excellent pbs series 'The Mormons' touched on the massacre and those involved.
Excellent series, I highly recommend it.
