just about to post this. I was thinking it could go on the NHL board as I am wishing McGeough would get investigated.

I don't think Magoo cheats, he is just really that blind and that dumb, he also really doesn't care about the hockey game itself. He just wants to make it on the TSN top 10 so badly!

As for the topic, this is brutal if this comes out to be true! It will make you wonder about every game in every sport. Its so easy for a ref or ump to make a close call go which ever way he wants.

Apparently he was the ref in the final game of the Raps/Nets series too. Go figure.

I wonder if he did any of the Spurs/Suns games? You know, the ones with the 40 slaps-per-game from Bowen on Nash.

Being an official is one of the most thankless jobs out there. Full of tough judgement calls that are going to make some one angry, physically risky and not financially rewarding.

I used to officiate when I was younger (for the $20 per game I used to make while getting excercise), but once I started making money it was hard to justify reffing when I was being verbally abused and having my windows in my truck smashed.

I think if you want to improve the level of officials, you need to do two things

1. pay them more
2. come up with a system of statistically monitoring their performance and perhaps have a publish system of reward to show how well they are doing - an maybe a big bonus to those that actually peform.

I don't know about paying them more, pay them fairly, just because you are making more or less doesn't mean you don't have a gambling problem or want even more money.

However I do agree with the stats, I would love the NHL or any sport to review every game for blown calls or missed calls. This way they can have your best people working important games. There is always going to be human error by refs that is just part of the game however this would be a great way to limit it in big games.

Turns out he did ref one of the Spurs/Suns games in the playoffs. The one where Bowen kneed Nash in the groin with no call from the ref (the ref under investigation, as it were).

Imagine that.

Awesome article. As soon as this story broke, I thought of Game 3... and I had no clue who the refs were at the time. I just remember walking away from the TV almost embarassed to be an NBA fan, the officiating was so horrid.

Between this news and the BS that went down with the suspensions in Game 5... like many other Suns fans, I'm pissed.

Well it sounds like the people he was doing these favors for were threatening the same thing.

I would be curious to hear what people like Nash have to say about this...

Somehow, I get the feeling the mob was surprised this guy was betting on the results himself.

If they were running a clean operation, I would have thought they'd pay him a sizeable and undetectable amount of money - undetectable beyond his own spending habits - up front but wouldn't want him exposed to detection from his own betting, which in turn might link him back to them.

Or maybe they're just stupid criminals . . . . . with guns and knives.

Simmons has attached the following addendum to his article:

Quote:
Follow-up note: A few hours after this column was posted on Sunday morning, an NBA fan posted "highlights" from Game 3 on YouTube that reveal Donaghy making a number of questionable calls during that Spurs-Suns game, including the three-seconds-too-late call on Ginobili that I mentioned in my column (and two months ago as well).

After the call is made, play-by-play announcer Mike Breen calls it a "late whistle" three different times, then a replay of the play shows that there was no contact, followed by Breen saying "doesn't look like there was much there" and partner Jon Barry adding, "I don't know what he saw!"

Collectively, it's a damning collection of anti-Phoenix calls, although not all of them were made by Donaghy. Expect the highlights of this game to eventually become the Zapruder Film of the Donaghy Scandal. Sorry, Phoenix fans.
...and here's the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvkKdXLwt0U

You just summed up the difference between the Italian Maffia and the Russian maffia right there. One is full of academics who couldn't make a decent living legally in a communist regime. One is a group of thugs with the odd brilliant guy here and there. Both can be ruthless and violent though. Guess which one is which.

I saw a columnist on T.V. can't remember who saying David Stern wishes it was Shaq in a dog fighting ring vs. the events going on here. You can suspend the player involved and remove him from the game. In this case you have tampering in past results and the implications against the integrity of the game are far more damning.

The one group of people you dont want to get in bed with is the Gambino family......but this guy did and will likely pay for it with a witness protection existance for the rest of his days...which could be few.

Sounds like they have him on tape talking to the wrong guys about the worng things at the right times....for indictments and conviction anyways.

I feel so ty for Phoenix and Steve Nash.

I already knew they got screwed in game 5, but this is just icing on the cake. They fought through every bit of adversity thrown at them, but just couldn't pull through in the end. Massive props for that.

If this all turns out to be true, the NBA will never fully recover from this. It could turn out to be the darkest day in NBA history
