Default Help cashing a cheque

Hey guys,

Just a quick question as you all know this city better than I do.

I have a Bank of America cheque for $4500 that I need to cash rght away. I can't go to my bank as they hold all cheques for like 6 business days and I really can't wait that long.

I went to Money Mart and since it's an American bank they won't cash it unless it's certified. They told me I could do this at any bank, but I went to BMO and they said I have to go to a Bank of America to have it certified.

Does anyone know if there's a Bank of America branch in Calgary. If not, does anyone know any other way to get this thing certified, or a place that can cash cheques from American banks?

Please help!!

Upon further investigation it appears this is the Bank Of America Canada Leasing Corporation

Anyone been there? Used it? Would the have tellers or someone who can certify a cheque??

I hate to be that guy to ruin the "send the customer on a silly wild goose chase for laughs only to have him find out he cant cash the cheque"

but you cant cash/certify that cheque unless you go to the exact branch of the Bank of America where that cheque is drawn on

Hmmm ... sounds like some kind of subsidiary. They should at least be able to give you some kind of advice on what to do or where to find a branch.

Here's a federal website listing for their Candian HQ.

I can't find any list of actual bank branches though ... you might have problems. If you can't get it certified, about the only way you can cash it is at your own bank, ideally your own branch. And even then they're probably going to hold funds for a few days. I deposit US cheques regularly into my business account without any trouble, but I'm depositing them, not cashing them.

You sure about this? Should be able to walk into any branch and they can look up the account and verify the funds are there.

Thanks everyone for your help

You are pretty much hooped to not have a hold placed on it.

US drawn, non-certified cheques are the most common cheque in which fraud occurs. That is why there is such a long delay.

Anytime you get a cheque from the US.. you should ask them to certify it for you...even if you pay the charge for Certification (usually 5 bucks).

As for right now... contact your branch manger or your Personal banking officer at the branch and see if they can add one to two thousand in Cashback to your account... at least then you could get some if it, while the rest goes on hold.

When I worked at a bank, 2 years ago, we held US cheques for 30 business days. Unless you were a long time client, had a portfolio of lending/investment products, there were no exceptions made simply because it can take that long for a cheque to come back.

The only bank that can certify it is the branch that it was drawn on and no bank here in Canada would be able to verify funds through their systems.

I would strongly recommend sending the cheque back and having the funds wired to you or if you have a paypal account, use that.

Good luck!
