Serenity: Collector's Edition (August 21, 2007)
The 2-disc Serenity Collector's Edition comes out on Tuesday!
If you liked Firefly, or Serenity, or both, or think you might like either of them, or if you have ever watched TV or a movie... BUY IT!
Apparently Joss Whedon believes the hopes for a sequel rest on the Collector's DVD. The original DVD made Universal a lot of money but it will need to keep up if they are to look at doing a sequel.
The Operative: And are you willing to die for that belief?
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: I am.
[ after a pause, Mal whips out a gun and shoots at the Operative several times]
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: 'Course, it ain't exactly Plan A...

I'm starting to feel lead around by the nose.
I hate needing to buy a movie I already have simply because they issue a "collector's edition".
And as much as I loved Firefly, if Serenity had trouble making a profit I'm not sure why another project would be any different. (*spoiler* and without Wash or Book, it wouldn't be the same)

JW mentioned that the sequel wouldnt need to be as grand as Serenity - perhaps a TV movie for SciFi combined with DVD only release.
Part fo the problem with Serenity was advertising and distribution budget for the move probably took away from any profits.
I know when it was initially on I remember watching parts of a few episodes but the changing schedule coupled with its stance space cowboy theme turned me off. It wasnt until bittorrent that i watch all the episodes and discovered their greatness, I promptly went and bought it Sunday morning after spending all day Saturday watching every episode.

Serenity was in the black in theatres (according to JW) and the DVD had huge sales. Universal made plenty of money off of it.

Definately going to pick one up. I've gotten a few other people hooked on it since an ex girfriend showed me last year. One of the best series ever.

Oh man...I just paid $30 for the HD DVD version of Serenity. Now I'm gonna have to spend some more cash.
...and a sequel...but they killed Wash!

and Book.
And yes, it made money. But I went to see it the week after it opened, and the theatre was pretty empty. I think it took worldwide receipts to make money. DVD sales I'm sure made a boatload of cash.
If they hadn't killed off part of the cast I think they could have easily done the series for a number of years and had a solid (but not huge) fan base.

yep, with how they ended Serenity i don't want to see another sequel or anything. the way that Whedon ended the movie came off like he was ending the story for good. if he had wanted to do a sequel he should have handled things differently

I always though the Book character was the weakest element of the show - so I have no problem with that character being absent from any potential sequels.

but I thought there was so much more to find out about him. There is something big about him - recall how he showed his ID and suddenly the alliance let the crew go free?(I think that was Bushwhacked) They had barely scratched the surface of who Book really was.

Yeah...I thought they may touch upon that a bit in the movie, but alas no. There certainly seemed to be a lot more about him that we never got to know and his whole connection to the Alliance as well.
I forgot about them killing Book off...silly me. Poor Ron Glass.

Was Book a former operative, like the character in Serenity...don't make me type his name it's hard...? That's what I assumed.
Mal: One day you'll have to tell me how you know about all this stuff
Book: No, I won't.
I think this release will be my Christmas shopping in one purchase. I'll be the guy at the till with 20 copies!

Did anyone get the comic books?
I always wanted to get them, but never did. It was supposed to provide some story from after the series but before the movie.

actually one small problem i had with the movie is that it broke the continuity from the series. in the pilot Simon says that he hired mercenaries to break his sister out of the institution, but the movie shows him doing it. also it seemed weird that in the series he was shown as a meek, mild mannered doctor with no real people skills but in the movie somehow he gathered the skills of a trained spy to break his sister out. wonder if those comic books reference that at all
