Bullet-proof backpacks for kids selling like hotcakes
I love America man . . . free enterprise fills any niche.
Selling bulletproof backpacks for kids so they have something between them and the shooter in the event of another Columbine, etc.

Crazy. But seriously not a bad idea at all. If 5 or 10 of the students had one of these in Virginia, there might've been more action to take out the shooter.
Won't do anything in Columbine though, didn't those guys have high powered rifles and pipe bombs?

As a University student, I wouldn't want one of these. But if I had kids and lived in the States, I might think this is a decent idea. You never know.

Um, I think I remember seeing something of the sort a few years back. Calgary-based 'Gunnar' office furnature makes office funature designed to withstand many elements of a terrorist attack. I saw it on the Discovery Channel once.

Why not just buy a bullet-proof vest and wear that? It protects not only your back, but your front as well...

while i think that youtube campaign is just ridiculous, you can't help but think this isn't such a stupid idea. Why wouldn't you try and protect your kid as best you can?

Because it's almost completely unnecessary. The odds of getting shot in school are really, really, really low. There is line when it comes to protecting your kids. If you really wanted to do everything you could to protect them, you would lock them in a Nerf covered room to keep them away from drugs, violence on tv, underage drinking and premarital sex. Parents don't need to buy into this fear mongering.

I don't see how people can think this is a stupid idea. Kids need to carry their books and lunch to school. They need a back pack. If that back pack can also provide protection, I think it's probably a good thing. Of course the chances of being involved in a school shooting are slim, but it does happen. Some of these responses are what I would expect if somebody was selling a vampire fighting kit to students. Providing a product that can help save kids' lives, no matter how unlikely the event that they are designed to be used in, is not a stupid idea.

I think it depends on how much it weighs if it is light weight and doesn’t get in the way of anything than fine than yeah why not I guess, but if its huge and kids are destroying there backs than its pretty unnecessary

What about instilling needless fear into the kids? How do you explain to them that they are not in danger of getting shot when you send them to school with a back covered in Kevlar? As if the first day wasn't nerve racking enough on them.

I have two issues with a backpack like this.
1) It's kind of overkill to buy a bullet proof backpack on the slim chance that a school shooting would happen in your child's school, combine that with the limited effectiveness of a product like this, and I'd say that the increase in safety to your child is negligable at best.
2) I could see some kid with this thin thinking he is invulnerable, and should a situation occur, getting injured because he thought he was more protected than he actually was.
All in all, a goofy product that is incredibly unlikey to save even a single life.
