Brazilian Restaurants
After reading the mexican restaurant thread, I was reminded of an excellent restaurant that opened a few months ago. Have you guys tried the new brazilian restaurant above Smuggler's Inn on Macleod? I don't work for them, but I definitely recommend. It's called Bolero.
If you've never eaten Brazilian, the gauchos (waiters) come around with grilled meats on swords (cue fotze comment). Beef, pork, sausages, chicken, etc. You pick the meat you want and the gaucho will slice a piece off for you. It's all good. And the gauchos keep serving you until you've had enough. Although I like the brazilian restaurants in the States a little better, Bolero's is a good iteration and I believe the menu will get only better as the chef becomes more experienced. All in all, good eatin - especially if you like meat and make sure you finish the night off with a couple of pieces of grilled pineapple.... Yum!

I'd heard that there was a Brazillian BBQ place in Calgary, but I didn't know where it was.
How expensive is it? I'm sure it's not cheap, but from what I hear, most of these places are worth it.

Ya, it's not cheap - I think the last time I went it was about $40... Definitely check it out and make sure you you wear your eatin' pants - If you're gonna throw down $40, you might as well try to put them out of business

Pfffttt. $40 bucks to set myself up for a horric round of the "Meat Sweats". I'm totally game.
I know it's kind of a horrible thing to be this excited about a night devoted almost entirely to over eating, but come on, it's meat! Mmmmmmm!

Churrascaria I think they were called.. I loved those places when I was in Brazil. They had like a salad bar to get your salad stuff and then they came by your table and served the meat hot on the skewers. Terrific meat and it's all you can eat. Depending on where you went it went for anywhere from R$15 to R$25 which was like $10 to $17 Canadian, and you usually had desert with that too and a couple beers for that price. Damn Brazil was cheap.

Is that where Open Seasame used to be?
Sounds like somewhere to head to.

We were talking to the waitress (guachette?) and she said that the restaurant used to be Smuggler's old storage room. So they fancied up the place and it looks great. Open Sesame is still there in the basement, and Bolero's is upstairs.

Compared to a Brazilian Steak house I ate at in San Diego this place was a dive. There is a great place in the lantern district in San Diego if you are ever there

I'm not advocating this on a regular basis, I do enjoy being able to move afterall.
But all you can eat meat served off of swords is somehow appealing to me.

Not enough meat in your life? Try one of Calgary’s new Brazilian-style churrascarias where it’s all meat, all the time. Huge chunks of beef, pork, chicken, lamb and so on are skewered on long swords and cooked over a charcoal fire. Servers carry the swords to your table and slice off chunks until you can’t consume any more. Smuggler’s Inn—known for almost forty years as a premium prime rib joint—has opened its Bolero churrascaria on the second floor of its Macleod Trail location. Cravings—a market-style restaurant on Fairmount Drive SE—offers churrascaria as a lively option and serves it at Spruce Meadows during major events, 7207 Fairmount Dr SE, 252-2083. And if you want to cater your own churrascaria party contact Gaucho Brazilian Barbecue Chef at brazilianbbq.ca.

I remember going to a similar restaurant to your Bolero. It was the Boa Nova in Kitchener ON. It is defenitely pricey, from what I remember, $38 for the buffet including the meat served your table and $30 for the regular buffet. Great eats and wonderful service.
Saw about 10 cops bust a homeless lady outside as well. Gotta love downtown Kitchener.

Been to Bolero twice in the last ten days, it's really good and for $35, you can't go wrong. The key is to have a strategy and don't come out too strong, stay to the quality cuts (rib eye, filet, anything wrapped in bacon etc.). Forget about the sausage and the lesser quality meats and for $*&$ sake, stay away from that salad bar. You're not shelling out $35 for iceberg lettuce, shaved carrots and creamy potato salads. The meat is fantastic, so have lots and enjoy.

You'd like Quebec then. I've hear of quite a few places that serve 3 course meals that are all meat.
I'm going to need to check the Brazillian place the next time I am in Calgary. It sounds like something different to do.
