Default Countertop refinishing, faux granite, etc...

I've seen companies that advertise this stuff as being cheaper than replacing the countertops. Anyone have any experience with it? Are there do-it-yourself type products out there to do this?

Got an old tile countertop that looks pretty bad, and would like to make it nice without having to replace it all.

I know you can do lots of things over existing tile as long as you prep it correctly. This isn't my best area but I would assume that as long as the tile is attached solidly then you can skim coat it with mortar or maybe a pourable/trowelable epoxy. I've tiled over existing tile before and didn't have any issues.

Ripping out tile can be a friggin' nightmare so hopefully you can just go over it.

Well it wouldn't be too bad since I'd just rip out the whole countertop instead of trying to do just the tile. But trying to avoid the cost of doing it all if I can.

I found a few things on google, but nothing that looks like a do-it-yourself kind of thing. I may try to call one of the outfits in Calgary that does it:
