Default Study: Obesity Spreads Through Social Networks

The New England Journal of Medicine released a report last Thursday with findings from their study which concluded that obesity is... contagious... sort of.

Conclusions Network phenomena appear to be relevant to the biologic and behavioral trait of obesity, and obesity appears to spread through social ties. These findings have implications for clinical and public health interventions.

Study

In the most stigmatizing scientific news since the 19th Century discovery of cooties, researchers have found that people who are friends with fat people are likelier to get fat themselves.

. . .

If one of two mutual friends is hefty, the study says, there's a belt-popping 171 percent chance the other friend will become obese.

Yeah there was a story on this topic in the news last week

It kind of stuck out to me because just this weekend I moved in with a friend of mine who, is a little on the heavy side and is in pretty poor shape…I think as along as you are aware of it than you are fine, but this also seems like yet another excuse for people to blame some else for there obesity

I think somebody has their cause and effect backwards. Most of the people I hang out with are in similar shape as I am. I find it hard to hang out with; say hardcore mountain biking enthusiasts, because that doesn't interest me. I however don't find any problems finding people to go for wing night with me. And I would say very few of my friends are in great shape.

Birds of a feather flock together.

Yup, that's a good point.

You're in your circle of friends because you share common interests and enjoy similar activities.

Agreed. And considering that overweight people get chastised and looked down upon, its not surprising that they often group together. Obesity is a big problem though...I find it alarming that some people just don't care about their weight. Eat and eat...and eat some more...who cares how fat you are.

I watched a thing on TLC a couple of weeks ago about very obese people. These people were like 500-700 pounds each. The big thing is they really were in denial about how much they eat. Like this one british lady "But 'tis only a lil packet of crisps." Yes, that was one packet of crisps. But you've already had 6 of those already today and its only 3pm. That's on top of the 4 meals you've also consumed today.

They had to follow her around, and note everything she ate. Then they prepared all that food and put it in front of her; sort of an "intravention" to show her how much she's eating. Her reaction was first of shock "Oh, I don't eat that much, do I?" to one of hunger "Can't you just smell all of those wonderful smells."

It really is a disorder.

Granted, I'm not exactly sqeezing through any fences these days either, but one good thing I took from that show was that most of the things that are bad for us are dull in colour; like burgers, fries, chips, etc. Whereas most of the things that are good for us are quite bright in colour. So I've decided to start reforming my eating habbits. No more donuts; unless they have sprinkles on them.

Good point on the sprinkles. I used to weigh in around 260...more or less...and have since dropped 40 lbs, and am still going down. All in 8 months now. And all I did was start to count my calories. I burn this much...and this is how much I can eat. I need to eat 500 less per day than I burn...etc, etc...and it worked. All it takes is an awareness of how much you're eating.

I'm usually skeptical of articles that can't even get their math right.
How exactly does someone end up with a 171% chance of becomming obese?
