Default Any gun fanatics here?

A buddy and I were thinking tonight about getting into shooting. We would get our licenses, either purchase or rent some firearms, and get a range pass.

Is there anyone here who is into this as a hobby? Where do you purchase your ammunition? As I'm seeing that it is relatively expensive. There is probably quite the stigma attached to something like this, especially up here in Canada, but I figured there must be some of you who are into this a little bit.

I used to do a lot of range shooting about 10 years ago, but I moved onto other things. It can be an expensive habit.

I know that there's an indoor range on Blackfoot trail between Southland and heritage.

I also know that there's a gun and ammo shop down in inglewood.

for the most part when I did my shooting it was with an ex-army buddy who constructed a range on his farm, and build a huge bullet trap at the back so that we could fire some of the heavier calibre stuff, but he was a little nuts so I stopped going because it was getting a little on the dangerous side.

What kind do you want to shoot?

First off, get you restricted and non restricted PAL. You can get this from The Shooters Edge. 1 Sunday, $200. Then you send in your app to the gov and then you can get any non restricted or restricted weapon out there. This will allow you to shoot handguns.

Ammo depends on what kind of weapon your shooting. I shoot a lot of military surplus weapons, such as the Russian Mosin-Nagant, SKS, German K98 etc. Ammo for these types of weapons is relativley cheap since you can most likley find surplus military ammunition.

I have a case of Czech 7.62x54r for my Nagant from the 60's. I think I got it off www.marstar.ca and it was about $200 for the case of 800 rounds.

Also bought a case of 1200 rounds of 7.62x39 for my SKS. Runs abot the same, $200.

If you're not shooting military surplus, prices take a huge leap.

There is pretty much no surplus .303 brit. So if you had a Lee Enfield rifle, you'd pretty much have to buy new ammo, which is like $10 for 20 rounds.

You can buy ammo locally at a number of shops. I like Russell Sports, but there's places like Things Military that also sell ammo. But it really depends what kind of ammo your looking for. I find that crates of milsurp is best found online.

There are a few ranges around also. If you want to drive out to sibbald flats, you can use the public range there for free. No pass required.

Cheapest route for ammo would be reloading your own, as that can wind up costing just pennies per round. It just takes time and patience.

But also keep in mind that day by day, surplus rifles and ammo are getting harder and harder to find. Ammo is drying up and rifles are drying up. 15 or 20 years ago you could buy an unfired Enfield for $50 or $75. Now the more desirable ones are going for $800+. Some of these weapons can be an investment, but if you take good care of them, thay might make you some money some day.

A good board to read is http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/

There is everything you could ever want to know about owning and shooting firearms in Canada on that board.

Any other questions, feel free to ask me.

Awesome post Worth....

I sometimes wonder what it would be like to shoot for real all those guns I use when playing Call of Duty or M.O.H.

Depending on the weapon it hurts more, and is far less accurate then what you see in those games.

So soldiers in real life don't run around in a full sprint, jumping to avoid getting shot, while all the time holding down the trigger getting head shots? If not, then I've learned nothing from video games.

Sure they do, haven't you heard of John Rambo, he was an example to us all. He could shoot an M-60 in each hand from the waist and hold the recoil, while hitting head shots on helicopter pilots 10 miles away.

Used the M-72 explosive arrow, a weapon that only the best can use.

I remember this one time, the Sarge gave him crap about his hair and told him to get it cut high and tight, and Rambo pushed him down the well and tossed a grenade in after him. Rambo had a wicked sense of humor.

Actually the one thing I liked in MOH was the reload cycle, and the pinging sound when you ran through your last round.

I think it was army ranger, which was an old game that introduced breathing movement to the sniper scope.

But its tough to simulate recoil effects. When I was in we used one of my favorite rifles which was the FNC1 A1, whaich use a 7.62 nato round with a round velocity of about 2700 feet per second. But after a day of shooting that thing, your shoulder was an interesting color of black, blue and red. I loved that rifle because you could be accurate out to 600 yards, and the round was fast enough and heavy enough to shoot through some armor, and barriors. You could also role it in mud and it would still fire and had 5 components for cleaning. But it was also a mother to haul around with a weight of 10 pounds loaded

Sob I miss that rifle

When we got the C-7, I though it was a toy with too many moving parts.

Recoil is not that bad. My Nagant has some kick to it. I took a couple buddies out and they felt it the next day, although I have no problem whatsoever shooting it. It's more technique than anything. Need to know how to hold the rifle properly and it doesn't hurt.

I've got one, fun gun to shoot, but dreadfully inaccurate, and a real pain in the butt to clean! Especially if you use the surplus ammo from marstar or even the czech stuff they sell at places like Russells.... sometimes it pays to buy the better ammo....
