Stupid Allergies
Mods, maybe we can get a poll?
Do you have allergies?
A) Yes
B) No
I'm allergic to grass and dry air... GRASS!!!! So basically, any time there is grass around (i.e. EVERYWHERE), my allergies act up (sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, etc.).
What's even worse? To combat my allergies, I take antihistamines, which relieves all the symptoms, but dries my eyes out and because I wear contact lenses, they stick to my eyes and my vision is completely blurred... SO ANNOYING.

I'm right with ya, buddy. Waking up every morning with a clogged, dry nose and sticky eyes is just the worse.
I was in a barn yesterday for about 8 seconds and soon after, I experienced the worst allergy attack ever. I still have the leftover headache and drowsiness. I take Dristan Sinus/Cold, works like a charm, my symptons disappear in about 10 minutes, but then I have a slimy dry mouth for the rest of the day.

It's seriously one of the worst feelings, eh? And I'm not even exagerrating. When you've sneezed for the 15th straight time -- full power EACH TIME -- and are left sitting there in your chair, completely tired, drained and powerless... waiting for the next batch of sneezes to come... 'cause you know they will.
So you take antihistamines and find they work! Hooray! But then you realize that you can no longer see clearly and your eyes are COMPLETELY dried out.

This year hasn't been bad for me for whatever reason. But grass does kill me. In fact (and this will sound like a lazy excuse) - I can't mow a lawn. If I do I'm sick for about 3 days.

If your allergies are bad, go see your doctor. He can set you up with a specialist and they can get you the proper treatment. Using Claritin and Reactine won't cut it for you if it's serious enough. Those products are available over the counter for a reason. You can go get the proper shots to combat it. My sister deals with terrible allergic reactions, her's are mostly from animals. My boss is allergic to a number of different things and he is going weekly to get a shot to help overcome it. I get it sometimes myself, but it's very rare. Only certain things set it off for me and most of the time I'm able to avoid them.

Same for me...when I was in my mid-to-late teens, every morning would be non-stop sneezing. Lately, just a couple in the morning and I'm good to go. But when I was younger, I had none whatsoever. Must be an environmental thing

If you're under 30 there's hope. I had extreme hay fever throughout my childhood and 20s ... antihistamines didn't do much, if anything, to control the effects. I was allergic to just about any kind of dust, animals, pollen, etc. I'd spend every summer with blood shot eyes, itchy roof of my mouth, sniffing, sneezing, couldn't sleep, etc. Buy once I got into my 30s the effects lessened dramatically. I still take antihistamimes (Reactine) throughout the summer months, but at least now they control the effects. So hopefully those of you who are in your 20s yet will outgrow the curse too.

I tried the prescription drugs during my worst years, but they were as bad as the allergies themselves, leaving me drowsy and impaired. Have the drug companies overcome those side effects yet?

Ive had a runny nose on and off for the past month due to seasonal allergies. One of the few enjoyable winter experiences for me is no allergies to the dust and junk floating in the air.

I don't know but I doubt it. Some of them still say to only take one or two tablets a day. I haven't taken one in a long time myself. I'm sure the warning lables mention not to drive after taking a pill and things of that nature.
But I just posted what I did because I've seen a few people really suffer with allergies in a terrible way and anyone who does should get the proper help. It's just a brutal thing to have to deal with but there are better treatment options available and a lot of people aren't even aware of that fact. Claritin, Reactine, etc are just temporary solutions to a permanent problem for most people and eventually, your body will build up an immunity to those drugs. Going to see a specialist and getting the shots you need is the only way to get a long-term result.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm quite a bit more sneezy and congested than usual and haven't been this bad for, I was thinking, 10 or 15 years. Make that 20 I guess. Crap, I'm old.

I used to love winter because of that. But then I got a job in a stuffy, dusty store and now it's all year round for me. And when you think about it, that's more than $200 worth of allergy meds a year.
What's even worse is that I'm allergic to popcorn (weird, yes, I know) and I work right beside a kernels. So that buttery smell wafts right in. It doesn't give me a reaction, but it gives me crazy cravings that I can't satisfy.

When I was younger, I didn't have allergies. Now I do. I'm allergic to everything from my cats to pollen to whatever... I really don't know what all I'm allergic to though because I refuse to take the test. The only one confirmed is milk... that allergy was mild and is getting worse as time goes on. It's lovely.

Put me under everything. I had the grid test at the Allergist and went bezerk on everything - grass, pollen, mould, weeds. So much so they had to stop and break out the adrenelin lotion to calm things down.
I'm currently on a 2 a day Reactine diet - which is new for me this year, 1 a day used to do it. I live in an old neighborhood now with Poplar trees and actual vegetation, so that's what I'm blaming.

Have you tried lactaid for your milk allergy? My wife and her sister both have problems with milk and lactaid has helped them.

Yes I have, but it didn't do much and I mostly forget to take it. So I just deal with an upset belly if I go all out and have cereal in the morning.

I'm just getting over my seasonal allergies for the year. I just have to blow my nose a little bit when I wake up in the morning now along with taking a 10 mg antihistamime pill. It sucked because I'm working outside this summer, and earlier this summer my symptoms were just downright awful.

A major yes!!! Every year when June is about to end, it gets real messy. Itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose EVERYTHING! I'm afraid I'm beginning to like winter more. Summer = allergies, winter = free outdoor ice time!!!
