Default Tornado watch for east of Calgary tonight - UPDATE Heads up Taber/Med Hat

Just a heads up for anyone out there. Makes me sick to my stomach I decided at 11:45 NOT to go out and chase this thing down. ARGGG!!!!!

Watches

Brooks - Strathmore - Vulcan - Drumheller - Three Hills
12:43 AM MDT Friday 29 June 2007
Tornado watch for
Brooks - Strathmore - Vulcan - Drumheller - Three Hills issued

Conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds or weak tornadoes. These types of funnel clouds form out of large cumulus clouds or very weak thunderstorms and normally do not have the energy to reach the ground. However one or two of these funnels may briefly touch down and can become destructive over a very small area. Treat all funnel clouds and tornadoes seriously and avoid when possible. Should one develop overhead take shelter until it dissipates. Remember these funnel clouds will normally appear with little or no warning.

Environment Canada continues to monitor the situation closely. Please continue to monitor your local media or weatheradio for further updates.

Should you spot a funnel cloud or tornado...And only if it is safe to do so...You can call 1-800-239-0484 to report your sighting. Please note this phone number is for reporting severe weather only.

Radar indicates strong thunderstorms developing in a line from just north of Okotoks to Rockford. The line is moving north at 40 km/h. The main threat is heavy rain strong winds and large hail. These storms may produce weak funnel clouds which can touch down briefly.

Is it wise to try to find a tornado in the dark?

I'm torn between;

"in the dark, we are all tornados"

or

"in the dark, you don't find tornados. Tornados find you".

I think B.

There are also a ton of planes flying over right now, so I will now proceed to make up wild conspiracy theories involving the storm, the planes, the military, and the government. Heh heh heh.
Those planes you heard were probably the cloud seeding planes. It's a project that insurance companies started for hail mitigation. It's a little out of their area, but they've gone to the secluded larger storms before.

Aren't being wise, and being a storm chaser mutually exclusive traits?

Just a little heads up for posters in SE Alberta and SW Saskatchewan. Things are looking pretty good for some decent storms today. if everything mixes just right there could be some tornados.

ANY STORMS THAT DEVELOP IN SRN AB OR MT WOULD
DRIFT TOWARDS SW SK..THUS A WATCH MAY BE REQ'D THERE LATER TODAY.
EHI VALUES FAIRLY HIGH OVER SW SK..THUS SHOULD STORMS MOVE INTO THIS
AREA THEY WILL BE APPROACHING A FAVOURABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR TORNADIC
ACTIVITY.

Heads up to anyone down in the Taber/Medicine Hat area. There is a mother of a cell passing over the border right now. It looks like a serious one and Environment Canada has said there have been reports of rotation in the storm. Rotation can lead to tornados.

I'd keep a radio on just to be safe.

Here is part of the warning from Montana.

AT 254 PM MDT...GOLF BALL SIZE WAS REPORTED AT THE DEL BONITA
CROSSING. THIS STORM WAS LOCATED OVER EXTREME NORTH CENTRAL GLACIER
COUNTY...ABOUT 37 MILES NORTHWEST OF CUT BANK...MOVING
EAST-NORTHEAST AT 20 MPH.

Still watching that cell. Now its just NW of Medicine Hat. I would bet my morning doughnut that it produced some funnel clouds if not tornados. Pretty impressive storm.

Calgary has one headed right for it from the south now. Sadly, I am going to the White Stripes concert so I wont be around for the fun.

hesla, I saw similar clouds to those in your photos here in the NW. It rained hard for a while.

Just as I type this I finally hear some banging to go with the light show, rain drops starting to fall again. The sky isn't even black at 10 minutes to 11, it's like a purplish-greyish type of color.

hell of a lightning show out here in the west end of the city... only problem is that the strikes are hidden by other clouds, so you only see the flash... still pretty cool though,.

Checking out the radar on Environment Canada website, there is a huge band of intense weather all around us right now. Just west of Olds and all the way north and south of there for quite some distance looks to be getting hammered right now along with just east and north of Drumheller. That is also stretching south to west of Brooks. Looks ugly out there right now. The whole "ring" of it is moving north and east.

The sky was light when I started typing this, now it's very black.
