Attn: Travellers with Pets
Pets Barred from Air Canada Flights as of mid-July
It's bad news for pet owners hoping to travel with their furry friends this year. Air Canada has decided to stop allowing pets on board its aircraft as checked luggage as of July 15.

Really, crappy news for those of you who travel with your pets. I've travelled with my dog a few times and feel much better knowing she's on the same plane with me, in the baggage compartment, than on a whole other plane, alone.
Good news is, WestJet still allows pets to travel in the baggage compartment. With the huge number of people who travel with pets, I think this might hurt Air Canada more than they suspect.

That really surprises me, and it dosen't. Air Canada has been losing touch with its customer base for years, and is well on its way to oblivion.
The pet rule is stupid

I saw the title of the thread and that scared the hell out of me, Im shipping my two cats to Calgary today through Westjet.
I really agree I think it would hurt Air Canadas sales, I know alot of people who travel with their pets.

The reason for the new restriction is because the airplanes require the extra room for luggage, according to a spokesperson for the Montreal-based company.
That's such a lie. The amount of luggage that you can bring on a plane has been getting smaller and smaller. And last time I checked the planes aren't getting smaller in relation to the amount of seats. Why don't they just tell the truth. That they don't want to go through the hassle of having pets on their air planes.

not sure which airline it was, but Mom and Dad were flying back from Vegas a year or two ago. He called a month in advance to make sure they were allowed to bring their dog. Two different agents assured him it was fine. They show up at the ticket counter and they tell them the dog is not allowed to travel with them. Dad laughed and let them know he didn't really care what the rule was, they were going to have to accomodate him as they'd already realyed the information that it was allowed.
In the end, the dog ended up sleeping on their laps the whole flight (she is a really good traveller), so if you put up enough of a stink, you usually get your way.

I-Hate-Hulse. This is a ban on pets as checked luggage. So luggage that is in the belly of the plane, not in the cabin.

I think this is only a reminder since they announced the same thing quite some time ago when they changed their rules about aeroplan as well.
Pets in the baggage compartment I have no problem with, in the cabin is another matter.

I hope that West Jet doesn't follow suit. We're hoping to move to Halifax in the next couple months and have two dogs that would be crated in the belly of the plane and my fiance up above. I'd be driving the car and it would be too long of a drive for them.

You have to be kidding. I have had all kinds of dogs, they have been great travellers, better than young kids most of the time. And we have a friend who does the field trial circuit all over North America, not one problem travelling with his dogs, and he sometimes takes 6 at a time.

1 likes the car and the other doesn't. I'd rather they get there in a few hours vs. about 5 days in the car which will also be loaded up with some of our belongings.
