We heard them here too. I don't have a window, but one of the girls that does said they were flying pretty low.
Off topic, but does anyone know what was up with those military helicopters flying around last night between 8 and 9?

I didn't see the planes fly by, but judging by the trail of exhaust they left behind, I say the earth is a half a degree warmer, and the gov is gonna raise my taxes to pay for the fuel they burnt...
Screw global warming..... it's Stampede!!!

Actually, after 9/11 when all the planes in the US were grounded, the entire country was between 1 and 2 degrees warmer than normal because the exhaust actually protects us from some of the heat. Now, in the long run it has the reverse effect, but temporarily, the more planes in the air, the chillier it is.

Those jetstreams were pretty low to the skyline, there were helicopters around that were much higher.

It could be one of two things.
one they are running a excercise.
two with the threat of terrorism, especially in an event as large as the Stampede, they're doing sweeps and securing airspace.

I doubt there is an exercise going on. The Reserve units in Calgary are dismissed until the fall, and many of them are doing work up training for Afghanistan right now because about 60 soldiers will deploy for A-stan shortly. If it is an exercise, the soldiers wouldn't be from Calgary, and I don't see that happening. Edmonton soldiers would do exercises in Edmonton or just hop on the bus to Wainwright.
The helos themselves would most likley have to be from 4 Wing Cold Lake.
I would like to see these helos. Where are they flying? Downtown?

Does the excercise really have to be about reserve forces, or about Calgary based units?
I doubt its an excercise unless its come kind of civil emergency excercise which would be nice timing considering that the Stampede started today.
Did the Army leave one of the copters at the grounds for display purposes?

It doesn't have to be reserve/calgary based, but why would reg force or other units come here to train?
The thing with reserve forces is that, as you may know, the training year is finished now. So many of the reserve troops will be on course. There will be no designated training exercise in any reserve unit across the country, except for those who are doing specific courses. And none of the courses are absed in Calgary except for maybe a BMQ or SQ course, but they would not be flying helicopters. Other courses above those two courses would require more and better training facilities that Calgary just doesn't have.
I did those courses in Lethbridge 4 or so years ago, but most of it was contained within the Armoury. All exercises we did were in Wainwright. We had to get on the bus and drive all the way up. So I don't see any courses doing training in downtown calgary at the start of stampede.
There may very well be a helo here for the display. There always is an army display at the stampede so that may be the case.

I saw the choppers too last night, pretty cool.
When the fighter jets do the flyby for the stamps game (i forget which one, and for what reason) but I always get a little chub. It makes my week seeing and hearing those suckers zoom by, makes me feel like a kid again.

I know last night that there were two helicopters making loops around the stampede grounds/downtown...pretty sure one was STARS and the other was HAWCS1.

If its the ones i saw, they were definitely military. Both green, and Stars has a very distinctive rotor sound. I'm not sure why Stars would be circling the grounds though...

STARS has an exhibition set up and occasionally has the helicopter do fly-by's during stampede...atleast they have in the past. I know for sure STARS was in the air last night but am not sure if it was for a work or PR.

I'm guessing it's part of the TERRORIST PROTECTION PLAN, of course it would be secretive and all that.

Yup, 4Wing does have a bunch of helo's, F-18's and snowbirds.
If they're snowbirds, snowbirds are for pure entertainment.
Their testing is usually done in northern AB and SASK, not in Calgary. They do go to Edm Intl sometimes, but not to Calgary as far as I know.
