$4M cocaine bust
More than 35 officers were involved in the busts that took place Monday and Tuesday on two homes -- one in the 4400 block of 33 Ave. S.W. and the other in the 100 block of Brightondale Parade S.E. -- as well as in two BMWs, each with a significant amount of cocaine stashed in hidden compartments, said Hatchette.
The arrest of three men, including a gangster known to Calgary and Edmonton police, will seriously impact the distribution of cocaine within southern Alberta, said Wozney.
"These aren't street-level guys," he said. "These guys are the top of the heap and now they can't sell it to the mid-level guys who can't sell it to the street-level dealers.
Not sure if I agree with those last statements, since the ages of those arrested are released in the article, and the oldest is 27-years old. Possible, I suppose, but not likely that a guy at his age is at "the top of the heap".

The police method for calculating the value of drug busts is such garbage and serves only to make the populace think that the bust was significant enough to make some sort of dent in "The War On Drugs." It is ludicrous to suggest that every gram of cocaine that was seized would be individually sold for $1000/gram.

No, the guy at the top of the heap is the one in charge of growing the cocaine in Central/South America, or whereever it comes from. I wouldn't be surprised to find that these were the head of the distribution network over here though. In one sense it totally disrupts the trade... for a while. In another it just opens up a big vaccuum that will be filled by the next guys in line, or a rival gang who still has the coke connections in place.
Good to bust these guys, but I doubt it will affect cocaine availability in Calgary beyond 3-4 months, if that.

Yeah, that's a good point also. The article states that the actual find was 40 keys, which would actually be valued at around $1.4M since with that quantity, these guys probably aren't cutting it down and selling it off in 8-balls in powder or rock form LOL. Likely pushing them out as entire keys at 35K each.
I'm assuming the $1000/gram price you quote is a typo and it's more likely about $80/gram.

From the Calgary Herald:

This was a record seizure for us," said Insp. Rob Williams. "We (have) 38 bricks of cocaine, each weighing in excess of a kilogram." The drugs were likely destined for sale in southern Alberta, Williams said.
It is estimated that 200 kilograms of cocaine pass through Calgary every week.
|
So they seized about 40 kilograms, or less than 25% of the weekly cocaine traffic, and it took a 4 month long sting to do it? Doesn't sound like they are too much on top of things, judging from those numbers...

Well, to be fair I don't think there are nearly enough resources in any city's police force to fully be on top of things. This is a huge industry we're talking about where the real players have much deeper pockets.

In retrospect, this development is a bit of a drag. Now you'll have to rely upon the hooker to provide the cocaine.

Great, $4 million in Coke. Now the city should seize it from the cops, sell it at a legal premium and fix calgary transit. Either that or just give it to the guys on strike right before they hit the negotiating table...

Well, they did also catch people distributing cocaine, which is more significant.
