Default Pop ups!! bah!

Hey folks,

Need some help or suggestions here.

Basically, I got a hand-me-down comp that is miles better than my old one. The problem is, it was broken, infected, and all that jazz. I've been fixing it up, and seems to be working great. There are some problems though. No matter what i'm doing, I get IE pop-ups (usually ads) every couple minutes.. its driving me scatty!!! I don't even have explorer opened, so I don't understand. I've tried a tonne of adware programs, spybots, virus scans, and just can't seem to figure it out. I tried uninstalling IE (that didn't work) enabling block pop-ups, firewall.. you name it, it keeps getting through.

Anyone have this problem, or have another way to get rid of internet explorer?

Oh, and i just noticed this.

Its putting friggin ad icons ON MY DESKTOP! How in the hell...

cheers,

James.

I had a similar problem, to be honest, I ended up blowing the system away and rebuilding it as opposed to trying to fix every problem.

The popups aren't being caused by explorer, your just totally exploited.

I have a feeling you might be infected with the Vundo Trojan. Happened to me too...and I went here...

http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/f70/

And posted a Hijackthis log.

You can download the program here...

http://www.merijn.org/programs.php

Unless someone here might know how to read a log and tell you what to get rid off, and what to keep.

It could be anything....I'm sure the people there will help you.

It might be a drawn out process, IF your problem is that bad, but its worth listening. It took me 2 weeks to clean out my system.

just google every running program from your hijack this log until you learn which ones are bad..then delete them.

If you just got the machine, can you just wipe it clean and reinstall the OS?

Its not a new machine, it was an older one what was much better than my previous one. It has a bunch of hard drives, and i really don't want to mess with it and lose more stuff. I also don't have all the sofware to get it back to where it is now.

It might be just as easy to get on the internet download super antispyware and spybot. Then install all the updates for these. Reboot your comp in safemode run these and that should fix about 99% of all spyware.

Download, install and update a virus scanner. Run it.

A free and good scanner is AVG.

After scanning with AVG do an online scan from trendmicro.com.

Download, install and update a couple different spyware scanners. Run them.

Good spyware scanners are Adaware and SpyBot.

It seems like a bit much but I'm not their to take a look at your computer myself, nor do I know how proficient you are with doing some of the things I would do, so scanning umpeen million times should help you out. If not, take it into a shop and pay an arm and a leg.

This has all been done

I ran a program called Security Task Manager ( http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/ ) and it seems to have potentially solved the problem... for now.

Now if I could only figure out why this computer keeps getting disconnected from the network..

edit:

nope... seems as soon as IE went online, the pop-ups are back.

Dangit.

Possible not to use IE at all? Since you said it seemed fixed until you went on IE. What about trying a new browser such as Firefox. I know with Firefox I get maybe max 1 popup every 2 or 3 months.

Yeah, I'd love to be able to just uninstall IE, but i just can't seem to figure out how. I went to add/remove, then clicked on the 2nd bar down (Windows programs) or whatever, and clicked uninstall, but its still there...

anyone else know?

The only problem is firefox SUCKS when it comes to streaming online video. It can't play (or so i've found) most videos.

Have you updated to the newest version of IE? I know a friend of mine was having that issue as well in fact the pop up's were actually opening his cd-rom drive after running some cleaners and updating IE he said it went away.

The Microsoft Anti-Spyware is actually quite good as well, and free:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Webroot's stuff is also quite good, you could download their trial:

http://www.webroot.com/consumer/prod...2-HHO_Links-SS

The thing with spyware is one or even two different scanners often aren't enough to catch everything on a really badly infected PC.

The advice with the hijack this and forum post is also good.

Well, i've downloaded the Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 30 day trial. I have to say, i'm pretty darn impressed. The virus or whatever (smitfraud) tried to get on not 5 seconds after i had trend installed and it picked it up right away, let me know, and deleted it for me.

Doing a full system scan now, and haven't had a problem in well over 30 minutes (this is amazing, by the way).

Will gladly pay the $50 to get this puppy fully registered
