iPod dock recommendations
I guess we're in the market for one of these, and I'm not real familiar with all of the possible bells and whistles....here's what I would require...
1. Must charge the units. The one thing I despise about iPods is not being able to charge them without connecting to iTunes. So annoying.
2. High quality sound. I don't want something that is going to start buzzing if I turn the sound up a bit.
Any suggestions?

So wait, you have an iPod and need a dock, or do you want to get both? Because as far as docks I can't help you, but if you haven't yet bought your device, check out Creative's Zen Vision: M.

A couple of suggestions:
The Apple Hi-Fi. A great unit with an amazing sound. The downfall is that aesthetically...it looks pretty blah.
Not sure if you're looking to spend this much, but there's a tube amplifier available on the market that retails for around 800. It is called an iTube. The sound is exquisite.

ummm you can charge iPods without itunes.... you just plug it in to the USB port it will charge off that. My home machine runs linux and I don't even have iTunes installed and I can charge it just fine.

Of course you can, but if you have iTunes installed on your pc it automatically opens and synchs files.

I've got a bose one as well, it has got an amazingly deep sound for such a small unit. Rico's right though, kinda pricy (then again all bose stuff is).

I bought an mStation orb at Westworld and I've been happy with it. It charges any kind of iPod, works as a stand alone player, or you can use it hooked up to your computer as well. I don't know if Westworld still carries it, but if not they'll have other options to choose from. Westworld has become a very good place to get iPod stuff because they're an authorized Apple dealer. They used to be pricier, but lately I've found their prices to be as good as anybody's. If not they'll generally price match. The bonus is that you get Apple dealer support.

You can also change the settings in itunes so that it doesn't open when you plug in your ipod. I use this because i am charging my ipod far more often than actually updating it

They're $299 new so for me to give you that for a used one and pay you to ship it across the border would be a little silly. Thanks though.

I don't use a dock. I have one of the old USB bricks from my 4G iPod, so I can charge without connecting to the PC. And as mentioned, you can configure iTunes to not automatically sync when any iPod is connected to the PC. A couple of simple clicks is all it takes.
I have one of the silver Matias Armor cases. Link: http://matias.ca/armor/index5.php
As for listening to my iPod on my home systems, I got a pair of cables at Best Buy for something like $15. The cable is a dock connection on one side and standard RCA audio cables on the other. I can play my iPod on anything with an Aux input, like my mini-system on the main floor or my home theater system. Simple solution.

I bought the Bose dock a couple of weeks ago. It's great for us because we are a 4 iPod family and we don't have a home stereo system to speak of. I really like the convenience of being able to slap mine on the dock and have it be fully charged every morning when I head to work.
I'm listening to it now as well. Every chance I get...and I with this I don't have to have my nice cancelling ear buds in and totally piss off my wife!
The sound is great to btw. I will admit, I got it on sale at Best Buy and ended up paying $50 US less than what it normally sells for...that helped.
