I think waiving a guy is a way around a No Trade contract. IMO Bryan McCabe has a no movement clause on his NHL contract meaning he can't be waived, or anything like that. A no trade just means you can't be traded, but I think the player can still be waived to the AHL.
So if someone claimed Bondra they'd still get a player with a NTC unless they wanted to pay to get the clause off. Essentially you couldn't waive him and you'd have to give him an extra million to trade him. But I think it's pretty moot as I suspect he'll retire or go back to Europe to play now that he got his 500th goal.
