Default Buying a used jeep; need advice

This will be a second vehicle used for weekendsummer fun and won't venture on much harsher terrain than a logging road with drainage ditches. It will also come in handy if we ever get the crazy snow like we did this year.

My budget is about $8000. It looks like if I stick to a V6, I could either afford a 95ish YJ with decent mileage (160k or so) or a 97-98 TJ with higher mileage (200K+). If i go 4cyl, though, I can get a 98-99 TJ with around 100-120k on it.

I know the V6 is a much more powerful engine but for my limited useage will I notice the lack of guts in the 4 cyl? Fuel consumption means nothing to me because it won't be a daily driver.

So I guess I want to know is, is the TJ dramatically better than the YJ and can I get away with a 4cyl in either the YJ or TJ? Also, I'm pretty sure the atuomatic trannys suck, but if anyone has experienced otherwise, I'd like to hear about it

Hes right. Its not a V6 its an I6 and if you can get your hands on one do it. They're bulletproof. However, getting a standard I6 is tough, much less so the 4cyls. That depends on whether you want a stick or not.

4 cyls are fairly weak, I6s are awesome. CJ, YJ and TJ are the same Jeep they are just different trim codes, ie. they come with different options and such, thats about it.

well actually, the tj is not a trim, its what they call a wrangler made from 97 on. the biggest difference being the tj has coils vs leafs for the yj. i guess i wanted to know if the ride was that much better on a tj.

thanks for the engine info though; it just sucks cause there are so many 4 cyls for sale

I would suggest getting one of these. The Cherokee's are nice for driving around and also high on utility.

I drive a 4cyl 95 YJ it does ok around town and on the freeway granted it is on 36" off-road tires, heavier axles, and about 100-200 extra lbs in armor and cage material. It would be nice to have a little more power from the I6, but it is not needed if your jeep is going to be a toy.

I have never ridden in a TJ but my Jeep rode pretty rough when it was stock and I would have to say there is no way a TJ can have a worse ride than a YJ.
