Messier Chips Commercial
Why does Messier NOT have the Oilers logo on his jersey in that chips commercial that is on so much.
All the other people in the add have team logos on their jerseys.
I figure this kind of applies to this forum because it's on during the Flames games, also more eyes/opinions might find the right answer.
Just curious.
Thanks in advance

I noticed that too and its odd.
The commercial has both the NHL and NHLPA logos, so it might mean that when the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979 or 1980, their agreement let them maintain the rights to their logo.
That's puzzling though because the Oiler logo shows up in other NHL things like the console games.
It might also be because of some special agreement between Messier and the Oilers that prevents him from wearing the logo without extra compensation for the Oilers. Also, since Messier is Alumni, he might not be part of the NHLPA and so is not covered by the normal licensing rules.
Either way, its very odd.

That is my only guess too. Messiers NHLPA status is irrelevent, as the team logo is an NHL property. The PA has no right to impose any restriction on the use of a team logo.
My guess is the same, that he has some kind of exclusive agreement with another team - which would obviously be the Rangers - but at that point, why not just use the Rangers logo? It isnt like the commercial would be harmed?
Or, it could be as simple as even Messier is too embarrassed to wear an Oilers logo after the season they just had.

My thinking is that the logo drew attention away from the bag of chips he's holding.

It's all about business. Otherwise, he would have an Oilers logo on it.
EDIT: I've asked him about it in person.

anyone else notice that all the teams but one aren't in the playoffs, and the commerical was made going into the playoffs?
Edmonton, Colorado, Montreal, Toronto, and Buffalo, like WDF?

or gave it negative attention...no playoff parties in edmonton (haha stupid oilers), they didnt want to have lawsuits for false advertising....but 3 of the 4 other jerseys are of teams not in the playoffs (TO, the habs, and the avs), so i dont know...

I think there is a TML shoulder patch. One woman has Habs colours, but you are right, I don't recall a logo.

Maybe Cal Nichols and the Merry Band of 28 want some sort of royalty?
Remember how the original plan was to take Messier's (and Troy Murray's) name off that arena in St. Albert..of course, if they ponied up the dough to sponsor it, their name could stay.
Of course, after outcry, that changed....but cash still trumps traditionl talks, even in the "Heartland".

Can you clarify what: "it's all about business" means?
