The question now is - is Robbie Alomar HOF material?
I say no.
Early in his career he looked like a sure thing for the HOF, but the latter part of his career was full of poor offensive stats, inconsistent defense and of course the infamous spitting contesnt.
Sorry Robbie. Not good enough. I enjoyed you as a Jay but the latter part of your career was unimpressive on so many fronts.

.984 Fielding Percentage?!
Almost 3000 hits??
He'll be in the HOF. No question in my mind.
Most players fall off towards the end of their careers, and he still wasn't terrible until he hit injury problems in his last 2 seasons.

MLB hall of fame is by far the toughest to get into. I think Alomar has a shot but he is far from a sure thing. The fact that he played for a pile of teams down the stretch hurts his chances as well.

That Oakland homerun in 92 was his high point. Also remember that great catch in game 4 was it of the 93 WS. This guy was amazing as a jay.

Baseball hall of fame is not just about your stats on the field, but how you represent the game, unfortunately Alomar will be remembered by anyone who's not really a Jay's fan primarily as the guy who spit in the umps face.
He deserves to get in, but I don't think he will and it definately won't happen first ballot.

One of my favorite players growing up. Probably the 2nd biggest moment in Jays history belonged to him. Set a defensive standard at second base that is now compared against.

Ty Cobb was one of the biggest racists in baseball for a long time. He got it no problem.
I think it is first ballot to be honest.

He's a first ballot, you're right. If it's a really tough field he's up against on the first ballot, he'll make it the next year.
Gary Carter had a career BA of .262
Great defensive catcher, but not a good offensive player. Alomar was a great defender, and a great offensive player for much of his career. He's a lock.
Kirby Puckett's numbers also aren't comparable, and he made it in...
.989% fielding??? He was a fielder...that's not very good for a fielder.
.318 BA over 11 years?
Overall he pales in comparison...
Neither of those guys had to wait long, so Alomar is in my mind a lock.

Alomar is the all time leader in GGs at 2nd base, and has a hell of a lot better batting stats than Ryne Sandberg who is probably going to make it (and should).

Well Sandberg was always considered a fairly classy individual, and he was also know for being a second baseman who was a power hitter, which was pretty much unheard of in the 80's. Kirby Puckets .318 batting average is nothing to sneeze at, and he was instrumental in leading the Twins to their two World Series wins. His career was sadly cut short when he was hit in the head with a pitch in spring training or he could have played another 4 years. Stats wise Alomar was a lock early in his career, but for the most part he's been off the baseball radar for 3-4 years now. He is an individual who will always be associated for spitting at the umpire and claiming that ump has been bitter since his son died. It is writers and the media that put these guys in the hall, and your perception as an individual does bear on your status especially in todays world. When Ty Cobb was playing black people were still largely segregated from "White" society in the states, so his views likely weren't that much different than that of a lot of other players from his era. Besides Cobbs stats are arguably the greatest of all time, whereas Alomars aren't. He'll be close to getting into the Hall, but if he's to get in, than I think it will have to be a weaker class that he's up against.

I hear the name Roberto Alomar, and I think hall of fame
They compare second basemen to him all the time right now, and that says something. Arguably the best defensive 2B in the history of the game.
He'll be there.

Bump for all Baseball fans. I am biased because Alomar was one of my favourite players all-time. I still think he should be a lock for the HOF. The media in the states seem to be taking a moral stance on players now and that will hurt him because of the spitting incident. For sheer brilliance on the field you have to take him - no?

No, at his peak his was a HOF player but that peak didn't last long enough. If it was the NHL he'd be a shoe in but the standard in MLB seem to be much higher.
If Bert Blyleven isn't a HOFer than Robbie Alomar ain't.
