Hockey Pool Success Stories
Hey guys,
How'd everyone do in their Hockey Pools this year?
My Story:
Ended up with last pick overall, tough break, but I made the best of it picking Alfredsson with my first pick. Was dead last in the rankings until november, when I made a couple of nice transactions, landing Juice and Langkow, and giving up a couple of floaters with more household names.
Made another good move when I traded Kopitar for Frolov straight up, this was when Anze was looking awesome, my poolmates thought I was nuts but it really worked out in the end.
Clawed my way up the rankings slowly, but march I was 3rd overall. 2 Weeks into March and I was first. Lost first for about a day one week back, ended up winning the Pool, and around 100$ by 6 pts.
How did you do this year?

I think I drafted around 3rd or 4th overall, picked Crosby, then went on a run of defencemen. Got Malkin on my second last pick and took Luongo on my last pick.
By November I was in first place and stayed there until January, then I was second place from January to March. In March I put up almost 100 points more than anyone else in the pool and took over first place. Never let it go again. I won by 32 points or so. $375..

I drafted 8th (out of 10) in my pool. I got Kovalchuk with my first pick, then Elias, then Iginla, then Tanguay. After than I don't remember who I got. I ended up 3rd overall. And only missed 2nd by 5 points.

I did pretty brutal because I didn't have any decent goalies.
My forwards were unreal though... ended up finishing 4th out of 10 and only placed that high because of my forwards.
Lecavalier, Crosby, St. Louis and Iginla really piled up the points for me... and were all drafted (not traded for).
Too bad I had Denis, Holmqvist and Ward as my goalies.

5th out of 17. My pool was a keeper pool, so I had to keep my few crappy picks that dragged me down. Namely, C.Ward, P.O'Sullivan, Vasicek, Ott and Bell

My dad has been running an annual hockey draft for 25 or so years, 100 dollar entry fee, a lot of nostalgia and meaning for his family and friends. It is now named after an Uncle of mine who was killed in a car accident about six years ago. Top 4 teams win money, last place team buys the beer for next year, second last buys the pop.
A buddy and I have been in for about four years now, and finished 7th our of 14 teams. Only reason we didn't end up second last, is because of a trade made fairly early on. We traded for Datsyk and Tanguay, and gave up Rick Nash and Patrice Bergeron. The trade also cost the team we worked with second overall. Excellent trade for us, bad trade for them.

Won my office hockey pool out of 10 people. I didn't come from behind or anything, I rarely dropped out of the top 3 actually. Will be collecting a cool $50 for my efforts.

I was cursed with injuries for the first half of the year. My pool only allowed one trade, so not a lot of player movement allowed to salvage unlucky picks.
I ditched Mark Bell for Anze Kopitar which was a very good move for me.
Was stuck in 7th and 8th place due to injuries to Forsberg, Gaborik and Havlat. I kind of lost interest in checking as I was about 60 points out of the lead.
I checked at the beginning of February when my players started to heal up and I was about 40 points out. Lundqvist was my goalie and got real hot near the end. I climbed into the top three by the end of march. And to top it off pulled ahead of the guy who had been leading for 90% of the year in the last 2 days! Classic comeback.
I won the pool by 15 points!!!
$200 to spend on playoff tickets for me.

I lead my league wire to wire, but lost in the semis. I needed ONE goal to pull it out, and none of Shanahan, Hossa, Semin, McDonald and Selanne potted a single goal. I was pretty disappointed.

I stunk it up this year. I trash talked too much at the draft I guess. I picked last and I made a couple of dumb picks. We had 15 rounds and I picked Reinprecht in the 10th and I don't remember the other 2 or 3 dumb picks. We were allowed to make two trades, one had to be done before Christmas and the other had to be done before March 15. The only reason I didn't finish last was because I made two good trades.
I won this pool three years in a row before the lockout. Last year I gambled on Roenick and Lemieux and got unlucky with Nash. I managed to tie for 3rd (last money spot) but lost the tie breaker of goals for. I miss the glory years.

I won my draft. It was in a head to head draft and I was competitive all year. My weakness was my goaltending. About 2 months ago I picked up Backstrom and Legace. Legace got hurt, but Backstrom was so hot it didn't matter. Ended up first overall going into the playoffs. I smoked everyone in the playoffs and had a tough fought final. The differance? Backstrom's three shut outs in the final two weeks. Feels good to be a champion. And the trophy looks good in my Y! Sports trophy case. Plus $200 is an ok treat as well.
