Ebay Sniping
Wow, I can't slow down my heartrate right now, it's going crazy. Does anybody else get an insane adrenaline rush at the countdown to the end of an ebay auction?
My heartrate is going crazy, my cheeks are flush, my body is getting ready to fight or flight, all because of a dumb mouse click that I have to time exactly with 5 seconds left in the auction (or face massive disappointment and regret) to register my crushing bid?
Does anybody else get a perverse pleasure out of ebay sniping? And then looking at your dashed and helpless foes (checking auction history for the other bidders as they tried to cope, but couldn't with only 5 seconds or less left to counter-bid?). Of course, most of the time, you, yourself are the only true loser as you might overpaid for something but wow, it's a wierd adrenaline pumping feeling. It was 10 minutes ago and my heartrate is still up. I don't think it's anything they could replicate in a real life auction because ebay sniping is actually more like ambushing somebody...and lying in wait to pounce. What a rush!
Of course, I absolutely can't stand it when I'm sniped myself so I gave up bidding on any auctions any earlier than 10 seconds before the end of the auction. There are few feelings worse than watching your high bid just disappear on a single refresh at the end of an auction when you expected the winning bidder message but instead recieve the "you have been outbid" message. Sorry, that was a bit of a rant, must be all the blood rushing to my head with nowhere to go. I heard that there are auction tools or applications that do all this hard work for you, is this true?

It's a pretty good rush being on the other end too. Watching something go from $4.75 to $80 in the last 5 minutes is quite a thrill as a seller!

I missed a pair of Mission White Hockey Gloves by 2 seconds... I wanted to kick my computer. I calmed down and realized it wasn't it's fault.

Actually, its the newest fad amongst Canuck fans. Kinda hard to carry a white flag around the ice while still trying to play hockey.

I read a lot of weird internet articles, and one I read some time ago mentioned how guys have a psychological mindset of always winning...even so in auctions, and specifically on eBay. Often people will overpay just for the thrill of "winning" the bid. So you're obviously not the only one who enjoys the rush of it all. Me personally, I like stocks but last year lost a ton in a few seconds, but there's nothing more satisfying than to see a stock soar at the opening bell on news. On the flip side, you become almost suicidal when a stock crashes on what you thought was good news.

Yeah, exactly. Look no farther then the bids up to $110 for a $100 Wal-Mart gift certificate. eBay is definatly addictive.

What prevents someone from signing up with 2 accounts and just upping the bid if not satisfied with the selling price?

The danger that you'll get stuck with your own item, having to pay for fees. I don't know. What else is there?

That's why you always make your max bid a wierd number. People usually enter in rounded numbers. If you add an extra dollar or a few cents to your bid, they can't outbid you by 50 cents if your max bid is 1 cent more than the closest rounded number down.

That's actually something eBay addresses, and the name for it is Shill Bidding. They do track IP addresses, but usually it takes a complaint before they do anything.

I agree, on both ends there is a rush. If you are a seller, have a friend who doesnt ebay create a dummy account to bump the price a few dasy before acution end to about 20% less than what other auctions are going for, that will max out your profit.

lol...I had a friend who did this to his own items. Ebay after awhile sees that the same person is constantly bidding on another person's items and suspends your account. Even if you constantly buy some buyers' items, Ebay does the same thing. At least this was the story a few years back, don't know if it's changed.
