JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Manager, Geotechnical Engineering, and working closely with the Geotechnical Performance & Drilling Engineer, the Dam Safety Engineer will lead the Oil Sands Dam Safety Program that includes the Oil Sands Tailings Management System, Emergency Preparedness and Response Plans and Operation, Maintenance and Surveillance requirements, ensuring that the Suncor Dam Safety Policy and Tailings Management System are implemented as per Mining Association of Canada Guidelines.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES- Lead the geotechnical structures lifecycle integrity program, as per Mining Association of Canada Guidelines for Tailings (for 9 ponds, 14 high-consequence dams)
- Provide technical oversight of Tailings Management System, Emergency Preparedness Plan and Emergency Response Plan and implementation Operations, Maintenance, and Surveillance manuals
- Liaison with Regulators on dam safety issues and accompanying regulators on dam safety site tours
- Support the Geotechnical Performance & Drilling Engineer in the execution of daily dam surveillance program, including real time response to dam safety incidents including operational upsets, erosion events, tailings spills, and instrumentation performance anomalies
- Supervise Engineering Consultants in the execution of annual performance reviews of all licenced ponds and conducting 5-year Dam Safety reviews
- Review and report compliance of all monitoring programs to the Regulators
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:- Engineering degree in Geotechnical, Civil, or related field
- Member of APEGA or other Engineering Professional Association
- The preferred candidate will have 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience in mine tailings dams (design, field construction, drilling and geotechnical instrumentation) with experience in risk assessments, dam safety reviews and implementation of a Dam Safety Program
Skills and Knowledge:- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Effective leadership skills; demonstrated ability to set direction, drive results, lead others and self
- Able to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment
- Valid drivers licence
WORKING CONDITIONS- The position is Calgary-based with periodic travel to Fort McMurray
