Looking at one of the cars rescue people tore open to rescue someone, I am amazed that there were no fatalities.
Sounds like some lazy a-hole who didn't brush his car off properly had snow fly off his vehicle while driving along Peigan, falling onto Deerfoot, causing the crash.

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
At about 2:30 PM on Tuesday the 3 April 2007, police, fire
and EMS responded to a multi vehicle collision on the
Deerfoot Trail under the Peigan Trail overpass.
Initial investigations indicate that some snow was knocked
off or fell off the Peigan Train overpass onto a car
travelling south on Deerfoot Trail. The driver braked hard
and was struck from behind by a black Ford Focus. The first
vehicle then sideswiped another vehicle before coming to rest
against the center median barrier. The Focus spun out of
control and was then struck by a large flat bed truck on the
driver’s side. The truck was then rear-ended by a blue GMC
mini van.
EMS treated the driver of the Focus while she was being
extracted from the badly damaged vehicle by the fire
department. STARS flew the 18-year-old female driver and
lone occupant to hospital in life-threatening condition. Her
condition has since been upgraded to serious but stable.
Traffic has been diverted from southbound Deerfoot Trail onto
Peigan Trail while the Traffic Section conducts the
investigation.

Ah, the ol' panic on the brakes maneuver when something appears in front of you. Nearly creamed someone because they did the same thing in front of me, except it wasn't snow, but water splashing on their windshield from a puddle.
Hope their alright though.

i wonder if those are the same people who brake to a halt when merging. i nearly rear ended some idiot who did that taking Barlow to 17th Ave. and that's not even a merge lane, it's a full on lane that you can drive straight into and have lots of time to move over. i've also seen the exact same situation repeated on the Deerfoot - 32nd Ave exit almost resulting in accidents
