Hey guys, I'm thinking of shooting a short documentary about Free Running. If anyone isn't familiar, here's a video.

I'm doing a road trip across Canada during the summer with this purpose so I was wondering if there any Free Runners here that would be interested in doing interviews and demonstrations.

Since this is a new Sport/Performance Art I want to document it's evolution across Canada.

God I hope there aren't any people on this board doing that. It's just stupid and I'd hate to see a thread discussing how one of the posters here broke something/killed themselves doing this.

A friend of my cousin's was participating in this about a year ago and he decided it would be a good idea to jump from a building from 20 or so feet. This was in Midnapore by the Taco Bell. Well, 2 broken ankles and other broken bones elsewhere were the result and he is still recovering.

It doesn't look significantly more dangerous than freeride mountain biking. The same rules apply too, if you get in over your head, you are going to get hurt (which explains why I only ride cross-country).

Some of that stuff is pretty damn graceful too, certainly much more artistic than riding a skateboard down rails and stairs and whatnot, in my opinion.

There is a huge acrobatic sense needed for something like this. There is a definite danger factor, but not unlike any other extreme sport.

This is part sport and part performance art.

Free running gone wrong. Nothing graphic, but still a good reason NOT to do this stuff, as impressive as it can be.

yeah...not pretty. I'm sure that this kind of things happens relatively frequently too, but doesn't make the videos with the highlights and the trendy music. oh well.

I'm not overly familiar with freeride mountain biking, but you're saying that they often jump large canyons that are hundreds of feet deep on their bikes? And considering the speed advantage you'd have on a bike over feet, it would have to be a much larger jump than the one featured in the video posted where the guy didn't make it...

I might also suggest that many mountain bikers wear protective gear. It's not a lot, but a helmet could save a life... these guys don't wear helmets.

So I take it that you would see this differently if these guys wore helmets?? Which, as more people get into Free Running I'm sure is something that will happen soon.

I've heard of this stuff before. I didn't know that it was called "free running" though. A more appropriate name might be "Urban Gymnastics" or something. Good luck with the documentary.

Heheh I was just discussing this (extreme sport/passtime) the other day and I didn't know what to call it. There's a new commercial where a guy gets into a Anna Kournikova (does she play anymore?) tennis match with freerunning moves. Thanks for coining the phrase for me.

I actually used to be able to do that backwards flip off the wall move, though I never really tried anything else. And that was at least 14 years ago, when I was young and flexible and bored. You know, before I discovered booze.

Now you got phone and sports commercials with a bunch of gymanists/freerunners

Back in the days without corporate sponsorship, just some kids doing it for fun and the challenge... sigh

I've always liked the idea of parkour more than free running...free running just seems so....showy

Parkour is more about doing the best way possible. It's practical, while free running is just flips and dipsy doodles.

The basic difference between the two disciplines is that in Parkour your objective is to get from point A to point B in the quickest way possible where in Free Running the objective is to get from point A to point B in the most stylish way.

I enjoy both disciplines for the basic fact that they're both challenging to find new ways to use the urban sprawl, just as skateboarding did back in the 70's and just look at what a cultural phenomenon that became.
