Default Education Background vs. Career

Okay, so after a conversation with a friend of mine and reading the school thread, I got to thinking about university, careers, etc.

A little background, my friend finished his commerce degree in accounting and is now doing very well for himself working as a technical recruiter. What the hell? Totally, nothing to do with what he went to school for, but hey, it has worked out for him.

Have you ever thought of or are you currently doing something that has nothing to do with what you spent four years of post-secondary studying? If so, how'd you manage to branch off into this unrelated field?

My details:

Education - Electrical Engineering

Career - System Specifications

Related? - Yes.

What I do - I write, write, write. Write up boring, technical documents regarding system specifications of various systems for internal and external use.

What about you?

Education: Finally should be BA Psychology by this time next year (fingers crossed)
Career: Won't have anything directly to do with Psychology. I know that already.

I think there are a tonne of transferable skills between all degrees (and all jobs, for that matter), so it probably doesn't matter all that much.

In fact, I'd be willing to bet that the majority of post secondary grads work in careers which are not directly related to their degree (especially by 10 or so years past graduation). I don't have any hard facts to base that on, though.

Not the BA in History, but hey, a degree is a degree. It taught me how to research efficiently and how to think critically (in a proper way). The diploma from SAIT is directly related to my job.

Thankfully I sidestepped the traditional trap for history majors: teaching. Good thing since I'm allergic to anyone under the age of 22.
