Genetically Engineered Super Mosquito
Oh this is awesome. Stop the spread of Malaria by making mosquitos resistant.
Researchers are excited and hopeful because they have succeeded to genetically engineer a mosquito that is resistant to malaria. Furthermore, the modified insect survives better than its disease-carrying ‘brethren’ and the gene is transmitted to future generations.
If such a mosquito can dominate in the wild, replacing the parasite-bearing ones, it could prevent humans being infected with malaria.
It gets better...
The ones immune to the parasite lived longer and laid more eggs.
Yay!!!
I suppose I could have included the link....Sorry.

Yeah... that's smart. Just what we need, less malaria and more mosquitos.

i think that they are going to deal with these mosquitos (when they get out of hand) the same way that was proposed in a simpsons episode from a few years back when springfield was overrun with lizards:
Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply unleash wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
nice, now that can't fail!

Because that would defy the laws of evolution. If they live less and lay fewer eggs, they aren't going to overtake the population that lives longer and lays more...

Why don't they just genetically engineer some extra-strong malaria-resistant people that live longer and lay more eggs? Over a few generations, they'll out-produce and eventually replace regular people living in malaria-heavy regions of the world.

Beacuse it would be unethical to genetically engineer people.......

No, I'm dead serious. A race of egg-laying, ten-foot-tall, disease-resistant uber-humans would solve all of our planet's problems. Of course, those of us original humans who are spared in the slaughter would likely end up working in their hatcheries, but we'd be at low risk for malaria.

That's a relief because I can't tell you how many times I've thought I had malaria! Will be one less thing to worry about.

This is very very interesting. If they ever release these things it will have one of two results...and one could be ugly. Either it wipes out malaria and everything works as they expect . Or, something comes up that they dont expect and we have an even bigger problem .
We'll see. It could save a lot of people's lives. the article didnt exactly present both sides though.

I'm no genesist, but does world like this give researchers information in genetically modifying birds for the avian flue virus? (ie. next armegeddon)

Maybe they can learn something from the methods, but not anything specific i wouldnt think. Parasites and viruses are completely different beasts.
