A Couple Drop-In Shinny Questions

Well, intramurals just ended, and I desperately need to satisfy the hockey fix, so I'm wondering about (indoor) drop-in shinny. I've never done it before, so I've got a few questions:

Do you just show up and if there's room, you get to play? Is there usually a variety of skill levels? Should I bring full equipment, or just a helmet + gloves? Anything else I need to know/expect? I know I need to bring a dark and a light jersey.

Show Up before posted time, wait in line pay your bucks, for the most part wear full equipment I think the only thing I can forsee no wearing is Shoulder Pads. Also if your looking at going to a City Run Facility, their season ends March 31'st, even though a few select rinks are considering running shinny year round but nothing has been set. depending on the time your going, like on a Saturday show up well well before posted starting time.
