Crossover

I must have been sleeping when this started....

When did the word 'crossover' become a marketing fad? I see it being used for a lot of items on tv, in print, and on the internet. First is the ford vehicles that are classified as crossovers... not an suv, not a car... so let's call it that! Now I notice a GPS device classified as a crossover... between in car and portable...

I guess I just don't like marketing gimmicks.

I remember when that's what they used to market music with.

They'd call songs 'crossover hits' and before you know it they were on the charts of 2 or 3 different genres.

Nobody gave a s..t in the 60's. If it was good, it didn't matter where it came from. I think it was the 70's when marketing firms started labeling everything into hard classifications so that crossover songs became a big deal.

Because 'crossover' sounds a hell of a lot better than 'tall station wagon' which is really what they are.

I think the BMW X5 is technically considered a station wagon for better insurance ratings.

It means they crossed the threshold of being a normal car to becoming one of the fugliest things around.

This may be a bit Off Topic, but this reminds me of the sudden rise of "the half boards". I can't listen to a broadcast these days without hereing someone working the halfboards on the PP. When did this start? Last year is the first I heard of it.

Heh. "Slap pass" is another term I loathe.

EDIT: Come to think of it, both terms ("half boards" and "slap pass") were originally heard by me during Vancouver games out of Jim Hughson's mouth. "Slap pass" for the 'Wunder Twins' and "half boards" to describe Naslund's position on the powerplay back when he was still good.

I knew there was another one that I couldn't quite recall, That's it "the Infamous Slap-Pass". I believe that is Hughsons' invention as well.
