Had an idea!

I wonder if its going to have any similarities to the book Gates of Fire.
For a while it seemed like a movie would be made according to the book.

It's from his Graphic Novel, also titled 300. you can download it here.
It's not based on Gates of Fire, either, but the topic (greek and spartan defense of encroaching Persian armies at Thermopylae) is the same.

If you can find the movie "300 Spartans" from the late sixties,I think it was Richard Egan starring, get it.
Probably the best strategic stand, facing overwhelming odds ever.
I seen it at least five times one Saturday at the Strand theatre ,where Jack Singer is now, give or take.
I am not positive but didn't the Spartan's need to cut off the Hun's at Thermopelae and some guy had to run the marathon to warn Sparta?

Most of the retellings of this overlook the fact that there were 700 thespians (not actors) who also fought alongside the spartans; it's really too bad, because I've always thought that was one of the most interesting parts of the battle: the volunteer thespian army (most of the thespian soldiers came from various walks of life, and their general was worked as an architect) choosing not to withdraw with the other greek forces, but instead standing alongside the professional spartan army in what everyone knew was a suicide mission. I haven't read the graphic novel but it sounds like it chooses to ignore the thespians; regardless, the trailer looks fantastic, and I'll likely go see it.

Good point, and just to further augment your point about the suicide nature of the battle, the 300 spartan soldiers were all 'sires', meaning, they'd all sired male children, so there was no risk of ending the bloodline in what was going to be certain death.
That's gutsy.

It's a crazy story, and while the trailer looks phenomenal, I have to wonder just how real this movie is going to seem. It kinda looks fantastical to me.
I got chills watching the trailer on the big screen, though. I'll definitely have to go see it.

i think that's the point, after all it is ancient Greece we're talking about, the kings of the fantastic. and with Sin City as proof, Frank Miller is the perfect person to pull off such a story

Exactly. It's supposed to seem fantastical, because really, can any of us possibly relate?
I think Miller's style is the only real way to capture a story like this. Otherwise it would look like a lamer brad pitt-ancient-greek-battle-movie.

It wasn't the Huns, it was the Persians.
The Marathon run occured after the Athenian victory over a previous Persian invasion at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. The runner ran 26 miles to Athens to tell the city of the victory.

The Battle of Thermopylae was in 480 B.C.

The Huns started invading the Roman Empire 800 years later.

Thought I'd bump.
Just saw trailer 2 and WOW this movie looks wicked.
Very rarely do I like these sort of movies, where it's half truth half hollywood (as opposed to all hollywood :-P) but this one looks great.

i think it's more of half truth half mythology, which is the best way to do something like this IMO

I niticed this trailer during the Superbowl (I think) then read up on the story.
It should be very interesting. I hope I'm not getting my expectations too high.

I have mixed feelings. I really liked Sin City (both graphic novels and movie) but I felt like the trailers involved a lot of yelling and overacting. Am I the only one?
