DAP Dynaflex 230 Caulking
Just a little warning to anybody doing any home renovations this summer. I'm painting the wood window frames on my house and so naturally this involves sanding and some caulking to fill some of those cracks. I went to the orange big box store and purchased a couple tubes of DAP Dynaflex 230 "Clear" caulking.... and the rest of the story is below, in the email I sent to DAP.
I purchased 2 tubes of your DAP Dynaflex 230 "Clear" caulking to do my windows on my house. It clearly states on the tube "Allow to dry 2 or more hours before painting with latex or oil-based paint." I choose this caulking so that I could paint the next day. Today I'm reading the Dap Technical Bulletin on this website and it reads "For best results: Applies white, dries clear in 7-14 days. Product should not be painted until it turns clear!!"
7-14 days!!! This is unacceptable. I took holidays to do this work on my house, and now because of DAP's false advertising on the tube I have to wait 7-14 days! I am extremely dissatisfied with this. Why would it say on the tube paintable in 2 hours if in reality it is 7-14 days. What are the effects going to be if I paint today (with Zinsser Primer/Sealer, followed by a coat of Latex paint), after not even 24 hours?
I just emailed this off this morning, but I wanted answers right away. So I phoned them up, and was told "We're aware of the problem on the packaging, it's a generic label for all the DAP products however the clear caulking should read 7-14 days or until product is clear." And was told "Just send in your receipt and we'll send you a full refund." Gee thanks, but $10 isn't exactly going to satisfy me... very annoyed with this. Apparently the chemical in the caulking that makes it white needs time to evaporate to turn clear. If you paint over it before it is clear, your paint will blister and peel off very quickly. This is probably obvious to contractors/carpenters, but all I know is what I read on the label.
