Born at 22 weeks....
An amazing story from the Daily Mail out of England.
Quote:
Born only 21 weeks and six days after conception, Amillia Taylor weighed just under 10oz and was only 91/2 inches long.
....
"I'm still in amazement," said Mrs Taylor, 37, a teacher. "I wanted her to have a chance and I knew in my heart that she was going to make it.
"It was hard to imagine she would get this far. But now she is beginning to look like a real baby. Even though she's only 4lb now, she's plump to me."
|
Quite amazing story of how the human body can adapt...I'm sure the road ahead is a rocky one but an amazing story nonetheless.

Wow. That's amazing. I thought her feet were some sort of gummy candies when I looked at the first picture... So tiny.

Wow. Aside from being simply amazing it really makes you think, I mean as it said in the article they didn't even know what a reasonable blood pressure should be!

When we had our 1st one, we were told that anything under 24 weeks or under 500 grams was hopeless. 21 weeks wow, long road ahead but those babies are tough. Our was born at 32 weeks and is now a healthy (although very evil at the momment) 2 year old.

You see a lot more of these types of situations these days. It used to mean almost certain death, but with the new drugs developed, these babies have more of a chance. In fact, I heard that Viagra is often administered to premature infants in order to improve circulation and open capillaries.

I heard that too, I also know they give Caffine to premes to help them keep breathing and to help them keep their heart rates up.

Scary stuff, but amazing how far neonatal care has come. I've always understood that 24 weeks is the magic number at which the chances go higher than 50/50. All the same--pre-term labour is a very frightening thing.

Thanks for sharing. It truly is incredible.
My sister had her twins at 29 weeks this past December. Only one survived and he is still in the hospital, he has come so far and yet has so far to go.

I don't get it. I thought the growing baby needed the mother's nutrients
and energy in order to grow into a full term healthy baby.
How the heck do they replace that?
Having said that, I have a friend whose daughter was born at 25 weeks.
She is now a sixteen year old sporting attitude.

Incredible really. The medical field has really come a long way in a short time. Having seen neo-natal care in full force (with our son) it really is incredible what these doctors and nurses can do.
