Digging up an old thread.

Bought the first book of this series after seeing this post. I'm only 200 pages or so in but man am I enjoying this book. I really enjoyed reading the first 2 Eragon books but this book is about 1000x better then those. I can totally see how this book can become a whole season too. Very well written. Can't wait to get to the next book. :P

Hopefully this turns out to be good because Martin's series is one of my favorites of all time. I still haven't read the latest book because I'm making my way through China Mieville and Steven Erikson right now but I should get to it soon.

This is an insanely good series. I've read all the books that have come out so far, and its easily one of the most epic fantasy series I've ever read. Not sure how it will translate into television though... each book is mammoth in length, so obviously they'll need a season per book.

Man I can't wait for the next one to come out... I think its a 7 book series and 4 have come out so far.

Very Nice. I'm right now enjoying The Scar by Mieville. The Bonehunters by Erikson is out in mass-paperback in March or April. Did not enjoy Feast of Crows nearly as much as first few books in the series.

I started FoC, but realized I had forgotten too much of the story so I'm currently rereading the first 3.

Didn't GrrM split the most recent book in half since it was going to be too large, and as a result FoC is the story of only 1/2 the characters?

yuppers - that's why IMO it wasn't nearly as good of a read as the first three.
but the next one's suposed to blow FfC out of the water even though it is only half the characters.

I met David and Dan in California last fall, when I was out for LACon, and we discussed the show over a long lunch (the restaurant was packed when we arrived, and completely empty when we left, and the waiters had started setting up for dinner). They impressed the hell out of me, and I'm really looking forward to working with them. They're both bright, passionate, enthusiastic. They know the books inside and out, they get the books, and they're committed to bringing my story to your television screens... not a vaguely similar story with the same title (ala Earthsea, or what passed for same on the Sci-Fi Channel). A Song of Ice and Fire should be in very good hands.

As for my own involvement, I'll be scripting one episode per season. I'll also serve as co-executive producer on the show, along with Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza of Created By, and Guymon Casady of Management 360. I have already had a number of emails asking why I am not writing more of the scripts myself. Three big reasons: A Dance With Dragons, The Winds of Winter, A Dream of Spring. As much as I'd like to be a part of the show on a daily basis, as I once was on The Twilight Zone and Beauty and the Beast, the novels take priority. David Benioff and Dan Weiss are very talented writers, but even they can't adapt a book that hasn't been written.

The novels were simply too big and too complex, and to make the sort of deep cuts that would be necessary to get them down to feature length would have required losing nine-tenths of the characters and three-quarters of the plot. The only way to dramatize a story that size, I felt, was as a television miniseries (like Roots or Shogun) or, better still, a series of series, with each novel providing a full season's worth of episodes.

That is precisely what HBO intends to do, starting with A Game of Thrones. With twelve hours to devote to each of the novels, rather than the two to three that a feature film would allow, we should be able to present a faithful dramatization of the story that will please both my own readers, and HBO subscribers who have never read a fantasy novel in their lives.

I didn't mind FfC that much, but when it comes to series like this, my likes and dislikes do not extend to the books themselves, but to characters I like and don't like. I'm not a huge fan of where the stories of Sansa and Samwell are going, so with both playing prominent roles in this book, it was lessened somewhat. That, and I want to know what is up with Tyrion.

Similaraly, the scenes with Frodo and Samwell dragged LotR down for me.

It will be very interesting to see how they adapt these books. Glad that it is being adapted into a television series rather than a series of movies, as the stories are just far too massive to cut down into a 180 minute feature.

The 4th book was definitely the... least interesting, imo, but I think a lot of that has to do with the parallel events happening in other parts of the world that will be in the 5th book, happening at the same time as events in the 4th book. I'm holding out hope that once the 5th comes out it will bring events in the 4th into better context.

Most of the best storylines weren't in the 4th, so I'm not too worried about the fact that it was slightly less interesting than the first 3.

I'm leaving my house to go buy them now.

I just polished off the 2 Eragon books earlier this month, and if they are 1000x better, I'm sold.

And I really enjoyed the 2 Eragon books too.

I'm about half-way through Perdito Street Station right now and I'm absolutely loving it. It surprisingly took me a while to get into the book but I can barely put it down at this point. I have to go pick up Iron Council at some point from Chapters, I believe it's the third book in the "series."

You'll notice a huge difference in writing. But that is to be expected when Eragon (the first book) was written when the author was 15.

I actually noticed a huge difference in between the first two books. You can tell the Author's style matured in the meantime, and it was even more enjoyable.

I can't wait for the 3rd book, should be the best in the series.

Yeah, you can almost feel that what is happening at the wall is going to weigh heavily in how the entire series resolves. That, and Daenerys. Both of which will be in DwD, along with Tyrion. Probably going to buy that one in hardcover, like an idiot, just to read the story a couple month sooner.
