Allan Cup-Stony Plain....Sutter and Smyth lose out...

for all fans on senior Men's Hockey the Allan cup final goes today in Stony Plain

some will remember Theo Fleury, Odjick and friends losing in this tourney a few years ago, it is emblematic of 'amateur' senior men's hockey supremacy

this years tourney features a smattering of former NHLers or Flames farmhands including Doug Doull, Brent Grieve, Gaetan Royer, Zenon Komarniski and Brent Grieve

my cousin is the captain of the Whitby Dunlops and they advanced to the finals yesterday by beating the Bentley Generals which features Ryan Smyth's 2 brothers and is coached by-believe it or not-Brian Sutter (cue Smyth/Sutter connection rumors)

so if anyone is in the area and is heading to the game, root for the Dunlops! My cousin has already won a Memorial Cup and CIAU men's championship and it would be cool for him if he could add this third cup to his trophy case

I remember that one year where there were like 6 calgarypuck connections on the Wichita Thunder, including your cousin. That was insane!

Yeah....4 different guys that played for us the year or 2 before...it was odd they all ended up there.

Jeff Petruic, Payner and Rapper are 3 I recall.

Peter McKellar was a 4th and then the coach Derek Laxdall (now with Idaho in the ECHL) was a former teammate or opponent in CP's junior hockey days in the MJHL.

Nathan Grobins was the goaltender the following year and he was one of my brother-in-law's best friends growing up in Houston, BC....my wife knew him well too, of course. He hadn't seen her in a dozen years or more and thought it was so weird they both ended up in Wichita at the same time.

The whole situation was pretty crazy when you think about it.
