Owner of Shop sues Homeless
Here's the article
Did a quick search and didn't see this posted. Thought it was kind of interesting. Basically a shop owner in NY is suing the homeless for a cool million bucks for camping out in front of his store and scaring off potential customers.

If he wins, how is he suppose to collect enough even to cover his lawyer fees? This lawsuit should only push the store owner into debt. What a joke.

I don't know where they all come from but homlessness has sure become a big problem in my eyes. There has always been a few but now it seems to be ballooning past the point of no return. When I was a kid I remember it was front page news in Vancouver when a man slept in some pipes rather than going to a shelter. Now it's common and I understand the frustrations of businesses and ordinary folks trying to do their business and shopping. I think a lot of the homeless are drug addicted and those released from mental institutions. Sad state of affairs.

I've heard stories of some homeless people (very rare of course) being millionaires. They are just too mentally disturbed or miserly to not be homeless.
While it is extremely rare, in a city the size of New York, maybe it's possible.

I suppose it's a funny twist that a homeless person is now being asked for money; instead of the other way around.

Well, my sister used to work at the Centre of Hope here in Calgary for a few years, and she said the good majority of the clients that came in were from the Maritimes and Saskatchewan, coming to Alberta with little to nothing in their pockets, in hopes of collecting in on some of the massive amount of money the province is making. They don't realize that yeah, you can make $10.00 an hour at Burger King, but you're also going to have to pay a mortage/rent, utilities, and buy food in a city that's not exactly affordable to live in.
New York has always had a high amount of poverty, though. The city is, what, 12 million people? I've heard that New York proper is the same size as Calgary in terms of it's urban sprawl. That's a lot of people in one confined area. New York isn't exactly an affordable city to live in, itself.
This guy is only doing those homeless people a favour. At least the time spent in court will get them off of the street for a couple of hours. They'll probably get a decent meal or two out of the whole works, too.

I know in Lethbridge here there is one guy who just goes around collecting junk, wearing rags for clothes and looks like he is homeless. He does have a home but it is just filled with piles of crap and is a little shack. Anyhow according to many people this guy is worth millions, it's just that he's not mentally sound and doesn't have control over his finances

Can't the guy just call the police and have the guy removed from the vicinity instead of wasting a crapload of money on a suit that will never get him what he wants?

Well, the article does state that he has done that or been doing that since 2004, roughly. He has also been asking that the warm air flowing through the ducts in front of his store be routed elsewhere so they be tempted to stay in front of his store.

He called the policed many times in the past. They'd shoo them away only to have them return later. He asked that the heating grates in front of his store be moved also. Still I have to wonder why he didn't phone any one of the homeless agencies in NY for help. I'm sure they would have helped the situation some.

It doesn't sound like he has been trying very hard. He sounds like he has only tried the strong arm approach. Instead the store should have looked at charitably options rather than moving air vents.

Why, not to sound callous, but dealing with the homeless might not be something that he has the time or the money to deal with. If anything the police failed, or they should have contacted the proper homeless charities to help them fix the problem. This person is trying to run a business thats being disrupted.

I'd say that this prominent attitude is a sign that we as a society have failed.
