Flying restrictions still in place?
Hi guys,
Been a while since i've flown, so I was hoping someone could tell me if there are still item restrictions on planes? IE: Toothpaste, liquids etc.. ?
Also, I'm taking my laptop and new digital camera (D80) through as carry on. Any problems with this? And, are they safe to go through the X-ray?
Might be stupid question, but if you know, or could direct me, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
James.
PS: Does anyone know if Toronto and Montreal have plug-ins at the gates?

I flew about a month and a half ago. With liquids, you're limited to small containers in a ziplock bag, I believe. Call your airline just to be safe - they'll know exactly what you can or cannot bring.
There's no issues when taking your camera in your carryon.
For your laptop, they'll have you take it out of your bag & put it in a seperate tray. Sometimes they'll want to swab it...they haven't done that on mine in Calgary or Toronto, but they did at Edmonton and Lloydminster...takes 10 seconds for them to do.

There are still restrictions on liquids yes. But its not as bad, u can't still take an open water bottle and such. Anything Gel or Liquid I'd still avoid taking to make life easier.
Here's a direct quote from AirCanada's Website:
Quote:
Effective November 6, the maximum quantity of liquids, gels and aerosols permitted in carry-on baggage has been increased to 100ml/100g (3.4 oz.) per article. These items must be placed in one clear, closed and re-sealable plastic bag no larger than one litre (one quart). There is a limit of one bag per person, which must be removed from carry-on luggage and placed separately in a screening bin at airport security.

Laptop and Cameras are allowed as carry on luggage, yes. But with your laptop, to save you time (I imagine u are leaving in Calgary) pull it out of ur bag and put it in a separate bin from everything else. Camera should be fine in the bag as well. The old rule of change, wallet and all that coming off still applies.
I know that Toronto Airport has plug in at the gates, u just have to find them. As for Montreal, i'm not sure.

I know when you fly in the US, you're allowed upto 3 ounces of liquids..each item that is liquid can be upto 3 ounces, and all of them have to fit into one ziplock bag (the regular sized ones, not the huge ones). If the container for the liquid item is larger than 3 ounces, even if you only have a drop of liquid in it, they will NOT allow it. In other words, the container MUST be 3 oz or less as well! Id go with those travel sized liquids..
and ladies, lip gloss is a liquid, as are mascara, hair gel, and liquid deodorant.
there are exceptions to baby formula and medications, but you have to have the prescription for the meds.
check the federal aviation website for more info....
regarding the camera/laptop, yes, you can fly with em both. at security, they will ask you to take em out of the bag, put it in the plastic bin, and that's it. no problems at all.
The above is info for flying into, and within the USA. I'm not familiar with Canadian regulations, but I can't imagine them being that different.

Don't be an idiot like me. I was in a rush and threw my laptop in my luggage for the first time. Never carried it on. I only brought it to charge my Ipod at the airport.
$1500 brand new laptop got stolen. I don't know whether it was in Vancouver or here. I called West Jet and filed a police report, but I know I won't see it again.
F'in theives. They stole my cologne too.
My fault. First of all, I shouldn't have put something that expensive in my luggage (should have charged the Ipod overnight).
Second of all, I should have put a lock on my luggage (Never have before and never had problems).

Ah locks are pretty useless...I had them and they got cut off so they could "search" my bag. Not much point if they just cut them off and throw them away.
The camera will be fine. I have gotten in the habit of bringing all my camera/video gear as carryon to avoid any sort of problems...they do the swab thing sometimes but it sure gives me the reassurance that I know exactly where it is all the time.

As far as Montreal goes, it depends where you're going. The US/International terminal does have them (not very many but they have a few outlets and I've seen people plug their laptops into them). I haven't seen any in the domestic terminal though, which quite a bit older and uglier than the international terminal.
When you go through the secuirty screening at Montreal airport they will check you for liquids. You are allowed up to 100mL which you have to carry in a transparent plastic bag.

Just to clarify, you cannot take a bottle of water through security, but you can buy one past security.
And if you going to or travelling within the US, you will need to take off your shoes and have them X-rayed.

I've wondered about this for a while now. How come I have to put my one travel container of contact lens solution inside a clear plastic bag? What's wrong with the containment method of the travel bottle?

thanks for the replies.
I will be leaving from Montreal to the US (via Calgary and Toronto).
I know most x-ray and camera related problems are with film, but i have a digital. That won't screw anything up inside will it?

The easiest way to prevent theft from your luggage is to not check in so damn early. When bags are checked, unless its close (1-1.5 hours to boarding) the bags just sit on a revolving belt.

Nope, I may not have as good a camera as yours, but I've never had a problem with the camera after security... so I think its gonna be ok.

The camera is fine in an x-ray machine.
I have taken my digital camera through a few dozen x-ray machines in a half dozen countries with ZERO problems.

Depends on the airport. Even if you buy some water after the security check you may not be allowed to bring it on the plane. Logan in Boston will not let you take it on for instance while Pittsburgh will (just the two U.S. cities I flew to in the past few weeks). In Boston they will pour the bottle you bought into a paper cup so that you can't put the bottle in your carry on and get it on the plane.

What are you, flying FedEx?
75% of the time they will ask if your camera is film or digital. Digital can go through the xray.
Lighters must be in your pocket, not a purse or a bag. Something about terrorists not having pockets.

The size of the liquid is important too. I was checking the westjet restrictions last night and it's limited to something like 100ml/100g containers.
