Obama to Run for President?

Obama announced his intentions to file papers for a presidential exploratory committee on his website, www.barackobama.com. He said he would announce more about his plans in his home state of Illinois on Feb. 10.

"I certainly didn't expect to find myself in this position a year ago," Obama said in a video posting. "I've been struck by how hungry we all are for a different kind of politics. So I've spent some time thinking about how I could best advance the cause of change and progress that we so desperately need."

And that's why I wanted to tell you first that I'll be filing papers today to create a presidential exploratory committee. For the next several weeks, I am going to talk with people from around the country, listening and learning more about the challenges we face as a nation, the opportunities that lie before us, and the role that a presidential campaign might play in bringing our country together. And on February 10th, at the end of these decisions and in my home state of Illinois, I'll share my plans with my friends, neighbors and fellow Americans.

If Obama runs, he will join an already crowded field of candidates who either have declared their intentions to seek the 2008 Democratic nomination or who are widely expected to run. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York is the perceived front-runner, but she has not officially declared her candidacy.

Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, the party's 2004 vice presidential nominee, declared his candidacy late last year, as did Rep. Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, a liberal critic of the war in Iraq, and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.

Sens. Joe Biden of Delaware and Chris Dodd of Connecticut also have said they will seek the nomination.

Other Democrats mentioned as possible candidates include the party's 2004 presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts; New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson; retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark; and the Rev. Al Sharpton.

Kerry and Clark have no chance. They've had their fair share in the limelight and are seen as having failed.

is it just me, or does it seem that the US spends more time talking about and hyping up the next election than worrying about what the current administration is doing?

The current admin is a lost cause.

Example? Do you really think 20K more troops is going to change anything in Iraq? Me neither. But they are still doing it, and the price will be paid in American lives (to say nothing of Iraqi lives).

May as well move on to the next guy.

So long as Obama doesn't get caught with a dead girl or a live boy, he's the next president.

At this point anyone's an upgrade.

A problem with fixed elections is that the lead up to them is massive. A US election seems to take over a year and takes up all the media's attention. The amount of money spent is insane.

Flash, you really think the US will elect a black president? That would surprise me. Maybe I am underestimating the citizens because I would not give them that much credit. Since they voted Bush for consecutive terms I have lost faith in the US voting public.

I don't like it. I really like Obama as a candidate, but if McCain runs and gets the nomination (which will actually be the toughest part), he'll win the election.

Obama needs a little more seasoning too and build up his base.

Obama can win so long as he doesnt have any closet whores.

If he runs for president, look for the searches to begin. And no, likely the searches havent been done already (extensive ones). The first black candidate to run to have a chance hasnt been through the usual grinders because he gets the "dont tread on me" sign until the going gets tough.

First name sounds like Iraq. Middle name is the name of the late dictatorial leader of Iraq. Last name is one letter away from being America's #1 most wanted terrorist. He is black.
