Windows: New Mail Messages
A friend of mine used my laptop for a brief period of time. While using it he checked his email. I don't know what happened, but now whenever my computer goes to the logon screen, it mentions that I (he) have unread email messages. How do I get rid of this?
right now im on win xp.
I dont use outlook or any other email client.
his email is just a standard hotmail one, so I dont think he did either.

Is it MSN Messenger telling you this?
Easiest way is to open his email, then fire off an email to his buddies either "outing" him, or offering to buy lunch for everybody. Then make some comment at the end that he should really change his email password.
Then he will change said password, and the login on your laptop will fail and it will quit bothering you.

its not msn messanger. You know when your computer goes to standby mode or something, and then you have to click which user you want to login as? that screen tells me i have x amount of unread messages, and x number of programs running. before this it only told me how many programs were running. Now i see how many messages my friend has.
If I do open msn messanger, it will log into my account, so I dont think that has anything to do with it,.

hmm, well I found this program called tweakUI and that I guess got rid of the message. The thing that bothers me though is that somewhere there is a program that is loged in as my friend and not me.

The feature can't be turned off but you can edit the registry permissions to prevent the system from being able to update the value if you want. Or you can disable updating for certain e-mail addresses.
See:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304148
If you do this, and set the SYSTEM permissions to Deny for the UnreadMail folder, you'll want to first go to each MessageCount field in the folders under UnreadMail, and set the value of MessageCount to 0 for each.

i'm your brother
have you worked with the new version of apache? i can't get 2.2 to do work properly on windows XP SP2 - had to roll back to 2.0.59 and apparantly this is gonna cause me a lot of problems getting PHP to work properly... haven't fully tested php on this version but some reviews have been less than favorable.

alright, thanks dedly...
I havent went ahead and done anything in my registry yet, but I have located the email address. Rather than modifying the settings in there, can I just delete the email address? I mean I dont see why it should be in there, it isnt my address.

Just thinking here; isn't it just a matter of opening Outlook Express, and then clearing his account settings? As well as marking all of his mail as read?
While you're in there; I'd also send out mail as him as previously mentioned. (But that's because I'm evil.)

Ah, common mistake.
I said Outlook Express, not Outlook. Are you running Windows (98 or higher?) If so, you have Outlook Express.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but go into your User Accounts control panel, click on the Advanced tab and go to Manage Passwords. He probably has a saved .net passport in there. If he does delete it and see if that helps.

It sounds like your friend was on your account, and when he was checking his hotmail or msn e-mail, he added himself to your passport. The e-mail # on the logon page is linked to this.

my friends email is hotmail.
I dont think I have outlook nor outlook express on my computer.
even if I do, i dont think my friend would take the time to set that up, he would just goto hotmail.com and check it.
If i open control panel and then goto user accounts, the .net passport is under my name and my email, which I check through the website, no program.
