Default Buying refurbished

I found a colour laser printer I liked for $200, but it's refurbished. And I don't know much about refurbishing. So, what exactly is refurbishing, and what are your experiences with refurbished purchases? Any help you guys could give me would be great, thanks.

I own a refurbished iPod nano and it's perfect. I think what refurbished means is that there was a minor problem with the item it was fixed, went through tests and because it had a problem can no longer be sold as a brand new item, so they sell it as refurbished. When you purchase refurbished items from Apple they give you a guarantee that the product will work, look for that when you purchase anything that is refurbished.

I think that when you buy refurbished, you increase your risk of buying a dud - some one else returned the item possibly because it didn't function for them.

I bought a Sony TV many years ago, and althought I saved a lot of money, and it worked well, after the warrenty ran out, I noticed that it had an intermitant buzzing/humming noise.

I bought a refurbished PS2 years ago. It came with a 30 day warranty, and I figure if these things work for 30 days then they are basically good for as long as a "new" one. I have never had any problems.

My laptop was an IBM refurb (T42p). They would only offer a 30 day warranty on it (that was their policy for any refurbished item). 2 years later it still works perfectly. It was definitely worth the $1500 savings.

I had a Umax refurbished Scanner working for 5 years, and it finally gave up the ghost 2 years ago.

My wife got me refurbished wireless headphones for Christmas, and while its obviously only been a tiny bit of time, they work great and I have had no problems with them. I think that they have a lot shorter warranty on them, but that would make sense I guess.

I had a refurbished Creative mp3 player once. Looked and functioned like new. Never had any problemes with it. Great savings. I wouldn't feel uneasy buying refurbs from the manufacturer.
