Blast at U.S. embassy in Athens called 'terrorism'
http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/Top...howbyline=True
Suspected Greek leftwing militants fired a small anti-tank missile at the U.S. embassy in Athens on Friday, confirm Greek and American officials.
...
The Pentagon has been briefed about the incident but has not requested any action, an anonymous military official in Washington told The Associated Press. He said there is no reason to conclude that the attack was carried out by al Qaeda.
Greece's public order minister said police were investigating the authenticity of anonymous phone calls from the Revolutionary Struggle, a militant left-wing group, which claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Callers have claimed the Greek leftist guerrilla group Revolutionary Struggle was behind the attack, Greece's Public Order Minister Byron Polydoras told reporters outside the embassy.
Police haven't confirmed whether the two anonymous phone calls are legitimate.
....
"This is an act of terrorism. We don't know where from. There was a shell that exploded in the toilets of the building.… It was fired from street level," Attica police Chief Asimakis Golfis said.

Uh huh. And the United States is going to attack Greece because of this attack? Oh wait, it wasn't Greece who fired the missile at the embassay, it was a bunch of wackos not representative of the Greecian people. Maybe old Dumbya can call down the B-2s and the 117s and think this through a bit more. How could this POSSIBLY lead to WWIII????

I agree with you.
Don't get me wrong, this is a newsworthy event, but not historical. Greece has always had it's fair share of inner turmoil, and right now is really only a pseudo democracy. The last few years have been relatively quiet, but when you look at their history, this is not really out of the ordinary.
It is also worth mentioning that anti-Americanism has increased a lot in Greece after the NATO operations in Serbia and Kosovo (Greece being a traditional and religious ally of Serbia)... and the war in Iraq hasn't helped either.

I doubt that. And to be fair, they would have been correct. The probaly wouldn't have been speculating on the casue of WWIII before the first one even happened.

Some history involving USA diplomats, including Greece incidents in the last 40 years. A British diplomat was killed there in the last few years as well:
Ambassador to Guatemala Assassinated, August 28, 1968: U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala John Gordon Mein was murdered by a rebel faction when gunmen forced his official car off the road in Guatemala City and raked the vehicle with gunfire.
Ambassador to Japan Attacked, July 30, 1969: U.S. Ambassador to Japan A.H. Meyer was attacked by a knife- wielding Japanese citizen.
Ambassador to Brazil Kidnapped, September 3, 1969: U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Charles Burke Elbrick was kidnapped by the Marxist revolutionary group MR-8.
U.S. Agency for International Development Adviser Kidnapped, July 31, 1970: In Montevideo, Uruguay, the Tupamaros terrorist group kidnapped USAID Police adviser Dan Mitrione; his body was found on August 10.
Ambassador to Sudan Assassinated, March 2, 1973: U.S. Ambassador to Sudan Cleo A. Noel and other diplomats were assassinated at the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Khartoum by members of the Black September organization.
Consul General in Mexico Kidnapped, May 4, 1973: U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara Terrence Leonhardy was kidnapped by members of the People's Revolutionary Armed Forces.
Iran Hostage Crisis, November 4, 1979: After President Carter agreed to admit the Shah of Iran into the U.S., Iranian radicals seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 66 American diplomats hostage. Thirteen hostages were soon released, but the remaining 53 were held until their release on January 20, 1981.
Bombing of U.S. Embassy in Beirut, April 18, 1983: Sixty-three people, including the CIA's Middle East director, were killed, and 120 were injured in a 400-pound suicide truck-bomb attack on the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
Naval Officer Assassinated in El Salvador, May 25, 1983:
Naval Officer Assassinated in Greece, November 15, 1983: A U.S. Navy officer was shot by the November 17 terrorist group in Athens, Greece, while his car was stopped at a traffic light.
Kidnapping of Embassy Official, March 16, 1984: The Islamic Jihad kidnapped and later murdered Political Officer William Buckley in Beirut, Lebanon.
Bus Attack, April 24, 1987: Sixteen U.S. servicemen riding in a Greek Air Force bus near Athens were injured in an apparent bombing attack, carried out by the revolutionary organization known as 17 November.
Attack on U.S. Diplomat in Greece, June 28, 1988: The Defense Attache of the U.S. Embassy in Greece was killed when a car bomb was detonated outside his home in Athens.
Attack on U.S. Diplomats in Pakistan, March 8, 1995: Two unidentified gunmen killed two U.S. diplomats and wounded a third in Karachi, Pakistan.
Attack on U.S. Embassy in Moscow, September 13, 1995: A rocket-propelled grenade was fired through the window of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, ostensibly in retaliation for U.S. strikes on Serb positions in Bosnia.
Athens Embassy Attack, February 15, 1996: Unidentified assailants fired a rocket at the U.S. embassy compound in Athens, causing minor damage to three diplomatic vehicles and some surrounding buildings. Circumstances of the attack suggested it was an operation carried out by the 17 November group.
U.S. Embassy Bombings in East Africa, August 7, 1998: A bomb exploded at the rear entrance of the U.S. embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, killing 12 U.S. citizens, 32 Foreign Service Nationals, and 247 Kenyan citizens. About 5,000 Kenyans, six U.S. citizens, and 13 FSNs were injured. The U.S. embassy building sustained extensive structural damage. Almost simultaneously, a bomb detonated outside the U.S. embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing seven FSNs and three Tanzanian citizens, and injuring one U.S. citizen and 76 Tanzanians. The explosion caused major structural damage to the U.S. embassy facility. The U.S. Government held Usama Bin Ladin responsible.

Obviously embassies of other countries are occupied or attacked as well.

was about 90% in jest. no, i don't believe this will lead to ww3. that said, if buildings and people belonging to the USA and their allies keep getting blown up eventually someone's gonna get their country carpet bombed off the map. when that happens, **** will likely be formally introduced to the fan.

The Greeks should do what they do best, sit on their ass, smoke, eat olives, and bankrupt their country to hold some BS olympic games. And quit attacking people who havent done anything to them.
The Liberals on this board cant blame the administration or any previous administration for this act of idiocy.

"Greecian people" - do they all use Greecian Formula? I think you mean the Greeks.
Remember we're talking about Bush so you can't apply normal logic. You have to apply GWB logic! Greece could be well on its way to joining the axis of evil.
They could use Israel's Lebanon defence. "The Greek government includes members of the Coalition of the Radical Left, so by default the Greek government and all the people of Greece are responsible. We had no choice but to bomb Greece back to the stone age."
Okay, maybe that's far fetched. But they could still use Israel's Gaza defense. "someone launched a rocket at us from within Athens so we had to launch an artillery strike against Athens".

Bush's logic seems to have little to do with the axis of evil. Otherwise he would have done something with North Korea.

Logically you are correct, but remember, we are speaking of Bush logic - two totally different things.
