Sportsnet ONLY has regional broadcasting rights for NHL games. Hence the blackouts, and the reason they can't show HD games.

Because TSN has the national contract, not Sportsnet. They are not legally permitted to broadcast games out of region.

Is their any situation in which me being able to watch any SN channel is NOT worthless ?

Quite often there will be different baseball games on the different SN feeds.

The bottom line is that if SN paid for national rights to games; they'd only be able to show 10 games per year instead of ~40.

If you want to watch hockey from outside your area, then get Centre Ice.

If you are a baseball or basketball fan, as those leagues aren't nearly as uptight as the NHL is.

Typically, I order all of the Sportsnet channels when the baseball season starts, and cancel them when the baseball season ends.

That is probably because Canada is considered one region to the MLB and NBA suits in NY. They're probably not even aware games are being shown.

My cable package includes all channels for a greatly reduced employee rate(from Shaw). Was just wondering if I should keep checking the other channels or not.

Moved to OT seeing as it looks like we'll be talking about stuff other than hockey now.

I've always been intrigued by the different leagues' approaches to TV blackouts. In the NFL, they often have a nationally-televised game shown across the network except in certain areas where a local team is playing. In that case the team's region watches that team's game. In the CFL? Unless it's a sellout the game is blacked out in the local market. The ownership, I believe, can lift the blackout regardless of whether there is a sellout but can only do this a limited number of times per season.

In the NHL... well, we all pretty much know how that works. You can only watch regional games on SN. TSN gets their day to show nationally on Wednesdays and CBC does the same on Saturday.

The
Sabres
Network

Too much Buffalo on TSN this year. Seems the only teams they cover are Buffalo and Pittsburgh.
