Default Wacky Weather Warning

Apparently things are really bad in Edmonton right now. Lots of wind and blowing snow. There are cars in ditches and people snowed in just outside the city.

It is going to get really really cold here today/tonight (-30ish until Tuesday), but I hope that it does not get as bad as it is in Edmonton right now.

Thank god there is a ton of stuff to watch on TV this weekend. 4 hockey games on Saturday, NFL playoffs, and 24 starts on Sunday!

I was in Vancouver on December 28th and it was glorious. Sad to see the shape that Stanley Park was in though.

It is allmost a complete white out here in Red Deer. Lots of blowing snow. I hope this doesn't last till Saturday. It may be hell on the highway driving to Calgary for the Battle of Alberta.

It wont. Looks like it will clear soon and then be dammmmn cold.

Also, if anyone has to do some highway driving check out this link.

The AMA has traffic cameras all over the place, especially on Highway 2.

If the weather is bad, I'll check those camera images during game days.

Doesn't surprise me at all. No exageration, driving home from Edmonton on December 17th I counted 25 cars in the ditch, about half flipped, all before Leduc.

My friends in Grande Prarie say the city just got hammered. Spoke to our store in Spruce Grove, who say it is white out conditions right now.

Sounds like a fast moving storm, but a big one.

Been the weirdest winter that I can remember in Vancouver. It first started with the rain in November that lead to the boil water advisory for three weeks, then the snow, then the -10 to -15 weather(un heard of for downtown Vancouver) then the rain and wind storms that tore apart stanley park, then more snow, then more wind and rain, then the BC Place opening and today, more snow. I'm not complaining, we usually get it pretty good and never have to deal with really cold temperatures, but it's definitely been one to remember.

Being an oil and gas consultant, my boss follows the weather fairly closely and gets excited when things are cold. I had a conversation this morning with him, after he had read a report by a meteorologist that had made several insights as to the weather we are having.

This particular meteorologist predicted that the following 30 days could be an extended cold front, as cool air circulates into the western regions of the continent, only to settle for approximately 30 days before migrating east. It is a cold front that is also complimented with some wind (obviously), but it is expected to remain, and is expected to create some of the coldest winter conditions we will have experienced in roughly 30 or 40 years.

My boss mentioned that in the article, the meteorologist claimed to track weather patterns over several years. His prediction comes with the assumption that what is happening now, already happened in the 60's with similar weather patterns and structures, and we are noticing it again. He also predicted that if this cold front snaps and warms in the next 1-2 weeks, that obviously the prediction would be incorrect and this isn't a cyclical event.
