Default Eastern Carribean Cruise

Hi folks,

I'm going on a carribean cruise in late January. I was hoping someone had been to one or more of these places and could give some advise on what you must do, what to avoid etc. Anything that is just a "can't miss thing" since we're only there for a day.

Thanks.

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (Departure City.. been to FL 4 times, but never there)

Grand Turk, Turk and Caicos

Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Phillipsburg, St. Maarten

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas

Any info would be great. There are a bunch of excursions you can pick from etc... but some inside scoop would be nice.

I have just under 3 months to get pumped up for this, so i'm starting now

Cheers,

James.

The new goggles also do nothing.

Turks and Caicos is very nice, but quite small. When we went there there was basically nothing other than the resorts. The snorkelling is not to be missed though, one of the best places in the world apparently.

Holland America? Kinda funny cause I'm watching Boat Trip right now.

Only place I've been to is St Maartin. I was in grade 4. I remember it really well though. Take a water taxi to the french side and eat at a cafe. French side was good for electronics shopping.

I can only speak to Tortola and St. Maarten. I'm not sure that there are any main attractions that are a "must see". As mentioned above, the French side of St. Marteen is nice to go see (but could be far depending on where you dock).

I've heard numerous people tell me that you can save a lot of money by avoiding the on-ship packages, and just finding a taxi driver when you get to land and negotiating a rate for him/her to take you on a narrated tour of the closest and most interesting things to see. Tropical gardens are easy and interesting to do in a couple of hours, which is about the most you want to spend at any given attraction given you're only there for a day.

Perhaps the best suggestions would be to do some diving from the Turks. If you're not scuba certified yet, you could get your class room and pool sessions done now, and do your open water (in ocean) dives when you get to Florida. MUCH better than snorkling!

I didn't hit T & C

Tortolla has nothing exciting so go to the first bar you see on the beach and get really drunk. there is only one bar on the beach there. We had a great time here, only because we got drunk.

I took the quad trip in St. Marrten and it was the most boring thing you could do. They lined up 40 of us on these tiny quads and you drive in a single line down the highway to a nude beach. Sounds great....no....50 and 60 your old woman with 50 and 60 year old wrinkles and bodies but 2 year old boobs. Instead of the quad trip, take the water taxi accross the way (5 dollars) and walk along the boardwalk and do some shopping. Find the Labatt House on the beach and I believe it is $1 beer. It is a Canadian guy that runs it.

We didn't get to the Bahamas because of a hurricane. If you do St. thomas (or anywhere for that matter) hire a cab driver to take you for a tour. Don't do it from the boat. You can negotiate a smoking deal for yourself and your group.

Learn to barter. That's all the advice I can think of.

Have fun!

I went on an Eastern Caribbean cruise last March and of your destinations, the two I hit were Tortola & St. Maarten - really lovely all told.

Tortola
Easily the best stop of our cruise as my friend and I decided to take the "Best Of" excursion offered by our ship - it was essentially a guided tour of the island, followed by an afternoon at a beautiful beach with lunch and a free drink included. (Btw, the free drink was tiny but for $1 extra you could add as much rum to it as you wanted which let my friend and I get blitzed really cheaply.) The beach was beautiful with all the leaning palm trees and gentle water you could ask for without being too crowded and while you had to spend a couple bucks for chairs & towels it was worth it cuz you really did want to lounge when you weren't swimming.

The tour was really cool too if you like learning a bit about the island itself - we went up 900 feet in less than 20 minutes of hairpin turns and learned a bit about the culture - including that they have cows all over the place wandering free and waiting to be made into steaks considering the way the locals drive. The views were breathtaking too. If you want to get really blitzed on bad alcohol take one of the party bus tours - they did much the same we did save with rum shots at stops and no beach (we couldn't get into that one) but had a better time according to the folks we talked with who did.

Also if you want to do some souvenir shopping, there's a nice little tourist market set up just as you get away from the docks (was in walking distance from my ship's gangway). I liked looking thru there but the best place to stop was at a spice shop called Sunny Caribbee - I got some tasty Jerk Spice & BBQ Spice there as well as gifts for family there (my only regret was in not buying more there for myself).

St. Maarten/Ste. Martin
Depending on where you dock, there is generally a taxi queue at the dock with established and posted rates for trips to the main tourist areas of the island.

We went for lunch over on the French side in Marigot for something like $20 USD and did some strolling around after for some shopping - I felt it was expensive but nice area to look around at. After a couple hours we headed back to Phillipsburg and one of the beaches at a resort where for a few dollars each we got a towel and umbrella and hung out there before returning to the ship.

Beautiful island all told - you'll no doubt enjoy it, although I have to say of the places I saw, Tortola was my favourite and Phillipsburg was one or two down on the list. If you really want to shop for electronics tho, it's St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands where you want to be - my friend got a great deal on an Ipod Nano & Sony digital camera while we were there (the place is totally a tourist hole but it was good shopping).

Mostly just enjoy and sometimes it is better to go off on your own like we did on St. Maarten but there were some really good (& cheap) excursions to be had that we liked too and I would've hated to miss.

Thanks for the info..

Alcohol is not of concern when on the islands, i'll probably drink on the ship.

Yeah, I really don't want to take boring drive on the street excursions. I was in Mexico with the GF a couple years ago on a cruise, and we did a dune buggy one.. all we did was drive on the roads, which wasn't all that bad, but I want to get into the island etc.. (I know mexico isn't an island... but the ones i got to soon are )

Anyway, thanks for the tips..

Anymore, keep em coming!

cheers.
