Phone in or mail in?
OK, so Im having a 'discussion' with some loser at work here. When you half-ass something are you 'phoning' it in or 'mailing' it in?

Both. Mailing is more appropriate for sports though, IMO.

I've only heard of "phone it" in.
I think I'm going to start using that more actually.

Not to sound Cliff Clavenish but the term "To mail it in" is synonomous with slacking off and giving it a half hearted effort. It was derived from the amount of time it takes for a letter to get to its recipient.
Phoning it in would imply immediate response.

"Phone it in"
Perform an act in a perfunctory, uncommitted fashion, as if it didn't matter.
She sang the National Anthem, but she was just phoning it in as far as I could tell.
|
Both seem to work.

They mean the same thing, but I would probably use phoning it in.

I'm firmly in the "mail-it-in" camp.
